GrandpaFeathers Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 these are one of my favorite zoas, and im looking to buy some, and maybe frag them someday, but i dont want to spend some money on a coral that isnt even what i thought it was. So what truly is a PPE? How do I avoid fakes, and what do I look for?
abe Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 PPE: green mouth, green skirt, purple oral disc. polyps are larger than normal zoanthids. pretty much it. they a bit chubby looking if that helps.
abe Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 about fity bux fity bux? price is going down a lil bit now. i get mine @ $25.
GrandpaFeathers Posted July 11, 2008 Author Posted July 11, 2008 ok thanks. i didnt realize it was that easy. haha now my only problem is finding someone who sells them.
Matty1124 Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 the skirt and mouth are very bright green, depending on lighting the oral disk can be very dark purple to very light, and can even be speckled depending on intensity of lighting... they are very slow growers, thats why you dont see them that often, originally they were a charity type thing (only at charity auctions), its hard to prove lineage back now that so many people have them... mine are pushing out two new heads right now!!! pushed out one polyp in 2.5 months and finally they are growing again... i would love to get up to 15-20 before i frag and sell/trade them... maybe another year before then
MarvinsReef Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 I've owned many frags/mini colonies of PPE's... I believe that there are two morphs.. both are nice in their own way.. here's some pics... they will be better than me trying to describe the difference.... brighter version... top down a frag.. lighter version... and if exposed to high lighting, both morphs will develop the speckles.. (shown in the pic below along w/ speckled RPE's) good luck... these guys are my all time favorite....
GrandpaFeathers Posted July 11, 2008 Author Posted July 11, 2008 i love the brighter version! my light is a 96 watt 10,000K pc over a 12 gallon eclipse. how would they grow?
ddr_phish Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 From the way yall are describing them and the pics, I think I have a mini-colony of them, picked it up from LFS for 25$, its starting to color up nicely. Are these PPEs? There colors have changed since I took this picture (I upgraded to MH). The mouths are still neon green as are the skirts, but the disk has changed to purple..
GrandpaFeathers Posted July 11, 2008 Author Posted July 11, 2008 those are green though-- can we see a pic of them now?
fish02 Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 Unfortunately those, at least in that picture, are not PPE's, but nice none the less. Take a more current picture but I doubt that they are PPE's.
ddr_phish Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 I'll take a pic tomorrow, lights are off right now, but the colors are almost reversed from that pic, except the mouth is still green? GPEs?
GrandpaFeathers Posted July 11, 2008 Author Posted July 11, 2008 when she moves like this, you move her like that
ficklefins Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 One more attribute of a true PE is that the polyp has streaks on the polyps skin when it closes. This is not a PPE but gives you a good view of the streaks.

The mouths are still neon green as are the skirts, but the disk has changed to purple.. it's very unlikely that these guys will turn out to be PPE's... I've seen these guys around for quite some time.. most of them will improve their coloration over time.. some of them have turned to one of the nicest palys out there which are the Desert Fox PE's... here's some pics of the ones I used to own... as for the GPE's... there are a few impostor GPE's but here are the true GPE's... one characteristic of the True GPE is the blue center around the neon green slit... that's the same characteristic as the True RPE's...
brian92 Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Those are amazing I've never seen skirts on a paly like that
ddr_phish Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Ok I finally got a decent and recent picture of my specimens (not sure if they are PPE or Palys) and it also has a closed one in the picture. Opinions?
