LFS said T5's are on the way out for reefing!

I had a talk with a guy at a LFS about lighting for SPS's...... He said that MH is the way to go and that T5's are on the way out for reefing because they cause more nuisance algae (in general) than MH.

I was floored when he told me this. (because I don't think it's true)

Any thoughts?

Sounds like BS to me.

+1 If anything, mh would cause more algae than t5's!

That's what I was thinking (as he was talking)

well both cause algae if you have a good CUC you don't have to worry about it.

That's just silly!

he must have a shiny new coralife mh setup he wants to sell you.

both are good, mh is better for larger tanks that are deep (over 30" or so) or for a shimmer.

hot5 is great for tanks under 30" and smaller tanks. its also great for more even lighting and ability to fine tune your color choices.

a good setup eather ways is lots of money.

I actually prefer t-5 to my halides as far as color and coverage of the whole tank. I think he's trying to sell u some halides

oh my gosh i just saw a pig fly by my window

T5HO all the way, I think he got it backwards. :)

i dont think any lighting is going anywhere any time soon... there are "fan boys" on both sides... thats why there is always bickering in forums

i would definitely not say they are on the way out, but i will say that i noticed a huge decrease in that fine green algae that grows on the glass when i went from my nova extreme to my sunpod, without doing any major water changes or changing anything else. with the nova, i was using my mag float daily. with the sunpod, its closer to weekly.

That may be due to less usable light. T5's do have better coverage, and your halide may be focusing the light downwards causing the glass to not produce as much algae.

+1 I just saw a goat with it as well!!!!

That is a nice(?) way of telling you to buy MH which will cost you more...T-5's are FAR from being on their way out!

I do know that with PC and T5s, when their bulbs are going bad after their usable life, you may see more algae on the glass, but not when the bulbs are still good. Algae is really another issue all together than light itself.

I am suprised they didn't say PC is on the way out or, worse yet, everything is on the way out and here comes LEDs. I love my T5's, just because I have stuff even in places I can't easily see and I like the coverage of the lights.

Pffft not only is he wrong, he needs to do a little research on what makes algae grow?

Clean up crew. and you avatar is messing with me

I 2nd the vote that he's trying to sell you MH cause they cost more!

It could also be one other thing, long term forecast.

I can't see T5HO's being gone (hell PC's are still around after this long lol) but I can see a gradual shift toward LED's being a mainstay of reef lighting in the future when the cost is a bit more acceptable. This may be what they are referring to, or they could be misinformed MH diehard enthusiasts.

you'd be surprised what LFS store people can tell you. the one that i regularly go to is great and don't try to pull any ###### on me.

however, there is another LFS here that told us to take all the sand out of my GF's jawfish tank. these are the same guys who use the slogan "dedicated to the preservation of our reefs" as a sales pitch, ships in tons of coral when no one is looking, and frags them up to make them look like they've been growing out in his tanks.

friggin' tards.
