Frogspawn is sick..

Hi All,

I purchased my first piece of coral last week (a frogspawn), everything was going well for a couple days, but last night, almost all of a sudden, it went from this:

to this:

I check water params, everything was OK,

Zero Ammonia,

~Zero Nitrate,

~Zero Nitrite,

PH is 8.4

Gravity is at 1.025

Temp is 79F

I even went out and purchased another test kit to be sure that mine wasn't expired or something (I know i'm totally paranoid)

I purchased the frogspawn on Thursday of last week, and 2 gallon water change on Saturday (I have a 14G BC) It seemed fine Sunday... When I did the water change I tested PH of the new water, and got it to match water temp of my tank. I also let the water/salt mix in a new, clean bucket overnight..

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

First, it is normal for corals to close up during hours when they're normally open from time to time, so you may have nothing to worry about. However, while I'm no expert, I haven't heard of frogspawns doing it for elongated periods of time.

How much flow do you have it under? It shouldn't make a difference overnight, but it could. What I read on the coral before I got my tiny head of it is that if it's under too much flow, it's tentacles will become retracted and "floppy". If nothing else, you could try moving it to an area of a little bit lower flow and seeing what happens.

I was getting a lot of flow, I'll move it to a lower flow location and see how it responds, It might not show that well on the picture, but the stony portion of the coral is pealing; exposing a brighter white under it.. it's just a small surface area that's pealing, but that, coupled with the retraction of the tentacles makes me think it might be sick :\

Thanks for the advice.

no.. no brown stuff.

mine do that from time to time as well.

my advice would be to move them to a lower flow area

My dealer told us to situate ours so that it has just enough flow to make the tentacles flutter. We have and it seems to be happy with that. In your first picture, I can see portions to the left that are withdrawn and it looks like it is streaming off to the right. That suggests that it might be experiencing more flow than it likes.

Let us know what helps.
