Urchinhead Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 I just went and got a MP40w PH for the tank over the weekend and after installing it it of course blew all of my corals off the rocks. So while I am gluing them down I come across my little friend here hiding out in my pink mili. It looked to me like either a spider or rock crab and per Urchinhead Policy and being the cruel heartless bastard I am it went right into the garbage disposal. No if's ands ors buts about it. So is it a rock crab or something more ominous and should I be worried about more of them? TIA. UH
rlf_racing Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 It is definatly a bad crab but you shouldn't have killed it. There are always people looking for the bad crabs, like myself. If you have a sump, you should have put it there. If no sump you could have traded him at a lfs. Next time you find one please don't kill them!!
Urchinhead Posted July 7, 2008 Author Posted July 7, 2008 Cheers mate. I think I saw you posting something similar in another thread about life and the sea and the like. I was very much of this opinion for quite a while. Now though it comes down to a matter of the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one. In my case it eating my beneficial organisms because I don't kill it outweigh my saving its life. Problem with putting it in my sump is finding it again and it preying on the good stuff in my fuge. Why in the heck would you want a 'bad crab'? And most LFS don't want them either. At least the ones who know what it is.
rlf_racing Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 I like the unusual inverts. I currently have in my 75 gal tank, one large stone crab, 3 types of rock crabs, and a large moon crab. All of which I put in there. Moon crab actually keeps my sandbed stirred since it buries itself in the sand.

You have no stated proof it was doing anything bad to your tank. Some of these crabs are beneficial to the ecosystem you are trying to build. I cannot believe the number of people on this site that find killing something that did not ask to be removed from nature. If you posted a better pic it would have helped. It looked like an emerald crab Sorry for flaming but how you killed it bothered me
Sexy Shrimp Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 It looked like an emerald crab It doesn't look anything like an emerald crab. I agree with you removing it but there are better ways to dispose of them - like clove oil and as previously mentioned.
krankykris Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 do you hippies euthanize spiders, flies and other bugs when you find them in your house? or do you guys collect them all and drive 5 miles away and let them go? grow a spine people, they're not like cats and dogs.
hyperbole Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 do you hippies euthanize spiders, flies and other bugs when you find them in your house? or do you guys collect them all and drive 5 miles away and let them go? grow a spine people, they're not like cats and dogs. I let them go outside. I try as hard as I can not to kill bugs. Spiders keep away lots of smaller bugs; flies and ants tell me my house is gross and I need to clean up and remove their food source. so, yeah, I suppose I am a big hippy.

If you posted a better pic it would have helped. It looked like an emerald crab Sorry for flaming but how you killed it bothered me Laura- Its no problem. You actually are not sorry for flaming otherwise you wouldn't have flamed but I understand your point of view. Let me address your points in reverse order. Of all the things that I could have done it was one of the more humane ways of disposing of it. Other options would have been to asphyxiate it which is slow and painful; burn it with some form of caustic solution like peroxide (others do this) which is also slow and painful; boil it again painful; smash it with a hammer which would have been more humane; or freeze it again more humane. But at the end of the day there is no humane way to kill something. As to it doing bad things to my tank. First of all how do you know? Do you monitor my tank? No. Do you know what is in my tank and what disappeared lately? No. So you do not have any idea what good or bad things it was doing. I do know I have found a couple of snail shells and hermit shells of late and lost a small stag horn crab to predation. I also know that based on the visual characteristics of this particular crab it was the most likely culprit. Next point. Crabs are beneficial to my ecosystem. This statement is patently and grossly false. Both in a general sense and in a specific one regarding my ecosystem. It is false because again you are not monitoring my tank, have no idea what my ecosystem even is, or what other creatures I have in the tank so you have no idea if it is beneficial or not. Take some time and do a bit of research. You will find that crabs are opportunistic omnivores but are primarily carnivorous and in Nano tanks tend to be a bad idea. I have seen Emerald crabs eat corals and even catch a fish. This by the way was not an Emerald crab. It wasn't green, it had black tips on its pincers, and it was the wrong shape. As it turns out it was a rock(stone) crab. Which is carnivorous primarily and prey's on other crabs, oysters, clams, snails and the like and gets up to about 4"+ so this would have been a very bad thing in my or any other tank. A key thing to look for in terms of is this crab going to be a bad or a good thing is the shape of the pincer. If it is pointed it is bad. If it is rounded then it is not as bad but will still most likely be bad. You are absolutely right. It did not ask to be removed from nature. And I did not ask for it to be on my coral or in my tank. My bad luck and it's bad luck. Furthermore I, if you read my other threads and the advice I give to others, try to be as humane as possible and as conscientious as possible in my aqua husbandry. But there are times when I cannot be. This was one of them. My point here is that you are being churlish and a boor and are acting from knee jerk emotionalism instead of carefully considered opinion. Next time please think things through a bit more before posting.

Try to deny it but you only wrote this long post to 1) to try and defend you decision for grinding up a live animal in your garbage disposal and 2) to insult me Nice very nice - you are treating me the same way you treated that poor crab. Initially I was shocked by what you did, now I am not shocked. You are the one who took it too far and you are the one who is being churlish. Enough said on the topic as you are not worth any more of my time.

Then your arguments are 100% hypocritical. they bash them on the head to kill them; not to mention, that's the most humane way i've seen in commerical meat plants.

You are right and you are wrong. I wanted to expand on why I did what I did and to point out politely but firmly that you were out of line, wrong, basing your statements on hyperbole, conjecture, and emotionalism instead of facts and rational thought. Furthermore you are acting childish and petulant. This is further borne out by the statements that follow. Nice very nice - you are treating me the same way you treated that poor crab. Please grow up and realize that even though they are your opinions and you believe they are both right and more important than anyone else's in actuality they are not and people are allowed to both disagree with you and point out where you are wrong. If you choose to ignore that then you are one of those people who clearly suffer from a case of the voices inside your head being so loud that you can't hear anyone else. Vegetarian = yes as I was born and raised that way! How did you know? Ah. This explains allot. Please pardon me. I didn't realize that you were born/raised as a Vegetarian. And have the associated zealotry, hypocrisy, narcissistic smugness, pathological need to lecture everyone on what is right and wrong based on your own world view that leaves no room for disagreement that goes along with being raised Vegetarian or a hard core Communist/Socialist. By the way since last time I went a bit fast for you let me slow it down. I am now insulting you. Just wanted to make sure that was clear.

mmelnick Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 Vegetarian = yes as I was born and raised that way! How did you know? It's probably the crazy flaming hippie vibe.
Laura6686 Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 It's probably the crazy flaming hippie vibe. Well, I have never been called a hippie before but if it makes you feel better then go ahead. The OP took offense with me being shocked at what he did to the crab. He then proceeded to insult me for the rest of this thread. I did not start any insult, I was shocked and its a normal reaction. After reading over this thread again, I have to say he has little man syndrome. He should not take offense to me calling him that as he was the first to start the insults. He even insulted Veg as if there is something wrong with them. Anyone who disagrees with him probably gets insults thrown in their face - oh that would be me.
reefer123 Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 you guys are frikkin hilarious!!!!!!!!!!! AHAHAHAHAHA!
gregowen420 Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 thats ok i would have just fed it to my mantis. l
jeffblly Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 ^Thats what I say. Let nature take its course. Mantis need to eat too.
Phixion Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 I don't understand how the word "humane" and "killing" can even go in the sentance. Is there anything humane about killing a person on death row? No! So how is tossing a crab in a disposal any more humane than how a fish is killed for the purpose of food, or how a lobster is killed to eat when dropped in a pot of boiling hot water. Heck, I'd deem UH's disposal tossing technique as more humane than letting a fish suffer from disease in any of our tanks. Just some food for thought. The point here is there is NO humane way to kill anything.
