Tman456
Hello, My dad and I are having a pretty serious problem involving our clownfish and possibly two peppermint shrimp. I have a 40g C.A.D. Professional Series with the sump and everything else completely working. My tank has been set up for a month and I have 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and 0 nitrate with a ph of 8.4. My salinity is 1.023 and I maintain a perfect 75 degrees with help from a chiller. I have 75 pounds of live rock that I received from www.liverocknreef.com which came fully cured but with a couple hitchhikers including aipstasia. I put two peppermint shrimp in and they disappered. That was 5 days ago and I haven't seen them since. And I had two percula clownfish that were fine for 3-4 days and suddenly the black one disappeared and the next day the orange one disappeared. A day later I found the black one burrowing himself into a hole and he then died the next day. And my orange one came out the day the black one died missing his back fin and part of his tail fin. What is happening to them? I have 5 hermit crabs, 4 dwarf and 1 halloween. 3 turbo snails, 2 margarita snails, and 2 nassarius snails that are all perfectly healthy and happy. I also have a goby who is doing fine. So what is happening to my clowns? We thought we might have too much waterflow but all we have is two outakes from the sump and 1 outake from the chiller. Or we might have some hitchiker that is taking them out. Whatever the reason this is devastating. Any ideas? Link to comment
Gerber77
you may have a hitch hiker crab of some sort. This morning my porcelain crab killed and ate my barlett's anthias right in front of me. Link to comment
basser1
I agree with Gerber77..... Sounds like something is happening to make your clowns die/disappear that quick. After the lights go out, take a flashlight and see if you can see anything. Good Luck! Gerber77....... I'd be getting rid of that crab!! Link to comment

What is happening to them? personally, I think your tank is too cold. 78 - 79 is a better temp for everyone in your tank. Why are you using a chiller? What were hour temps before the chiller? I have 5 hermit crabs, 4 dwarf and 1 halloween. 3 turbo snails, 2 margarita snails, and 2 nassarius snails that are all perfectly healthy and happy. I also have a goby who is doing fine. gregowen420
75 degrees sounds alittle low to me i keep mine 78-80. does that sound low to anybody else? Link to comment
DCG1286
Although the tank temps are a little low...78-82 is preferred...I agree with basser1...sounds like something is killing your fish and shrimp...possible hitchhiker crab or something...check your tank when the lights go out...that's when the fun starts Good Luck! -DCG Link to comment

Have you heard any loud popping or cracking sounds from the tank? You may have a mantis or pistol shrimp. You said one of the clowns was burrowing into a hole? I'd check there first, it might have been pulled in and just looked like it was digging in. Link to comment
DCG1286
It's funny though, the large cracking sounds...I thought I had a mantis at one point...til i found my big hermit smacking his shell against the glass... But as stated some Mantis bury themselves in the sand...and it is possible your clown was dragged into it... Look for a thread or site, on how to build a trap...i have never had to catch one so i don't really know. If you have one...try capturing it and trading it. Always a collector for them...however i am not one of them! -DCG Link to comment
Tman456
Well luckily my peppermint shrimp reappeared and are fine. So I am trying my luck with a six line wrasse who hopefully will kill the pest. Link to comment

Have you added it yet? Have you figured out what happened to your clowns? Would it be worth taking a little more time to solve that riddle first? Good luck, hank Link to comment
