animalrie
I just got back from a week long camp there and was thoroughly impressed. The passion they show for their animals is great! The trainers and employees are very knowledgable. Here are some pics of the fish. Giant clam: At least 1 1/2 feet long. Another clam: Clam tank: This tank and the following reef tank are connected and add up to a total of over 500 gallons! These two tanks have 400 watt metal halide lights. That reef tank and a couple of smaller ones are the only ones with live coral. All the other corals are artificial to preserve reefs in the wild. The corals in their reefs are propagated right there at Seaworld San Antonio. Behind the scenes prop tanks: More pics in the next post! Link to comment
animalrie
Eagle Ray tank: Sharks: Eel tank: 80 gallon "red themed" tank. A BUNCH of pajama cardinals and blood shrimp! Bamboo shark. Very cool little guy and very young. He's in this basket so we could get a chance to feel him. Awesome Seaworld car! Hope you all liked it. I have a few more behind the scenes pics, and quite a few of the other marine mammals, which I may post later, but I don't want to post anything I shouldn't. Thanks for looking, guys! The camp was one of the most interesting experiences ever! Link to comment
CorvetteJoe
Cool pics, looks like an enjoyable time Go ahead and post up the pics.. if they let you take them, then there isnt anything private. Otherwise they would have a no camera policy (unless you took ninja pics that is) I am jealous... Seaworld Orlando has removed most of their reef and small display tanks. They used to have one building just PACKED with many many tanks mounted in the walls and all around the walk ways. Everything from freshwater, to giant lobster, to seahorses to other odd stuff that you could sit there and watch for hours. They replaced the building with something boring now. The new reef tanks has been reduced to one big display tank located in a section of one of the rides (Atlantis, Jewls of the Sea exhibit). I am greatly disappointed in them doing this. It looks like any other tank you'd see on display over at RC, only built into a wall. But as you mentioned every employee there cares greatly for the animals they are in charge of. Seaworld (and anheuser busch) spend truckloads of money locally in Central Fl for helping out natural habitats, rescue animals and other projects. They really care for the marine life around here and it's a great place to just go hang out for the afternoon (season pass FTW!) and watch the marine life. Disney also has an impressive sea/marine exhibit in their Living Seas building at Epcot. Its got the biggest single tank I've ever seen that wasn't specifically for a whale or something (like the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta). They also have lots of stuff on public display much like the pics you posted, frag tanks, breeding tanks, etc setup in a lab like display showing how its all done. Very cool display. Link to comment
glennr1978
Thanks for sharing! I need to get up to Seaworld this summer. It's been a couple years since I was there last. Link to comment

Shadowrider
I wish I lived next door to a sea world or Montery Bay aquarium. I'd probably be there every day. Thanks for sharing the pictures. Link to comment
hazmat
We took my 7 year old son there a few months ago. I loved it! It's amazing how once you get into the hobby you look at things a whole different way!! I loved the huge tank with all the SW fish. Hunter and I sat there and identified all the different types of fish. Did you see the tank with the cardinal fish? They looked like they were fake. They all just sat there totally not moving! We got a bunch of pics too. Here is our pic of the shark..... Link to comment
animalrie
Yes, I saw the cardinalfish tank. It looks like a nano, but it's 80 gallons! Here are just a few more behind the scenes pics. Bull shark they are keeping for a local. Nurse shark with scoliosis And just for fun... PENGUINS! Their habitat is 37 degrees with a windchill of 27 degrees. Burrrr...(these pics are taken from within the exhibit. We got to shovel snow and feed the little guys! Btw, penguins aren't as sweet as they look. ) Link to comment
shrimphombre
Man that is pretty cool! I have a season pass to that sea world as I live in san antonio and i always used to go to that camp when i was little. That sps/clam tank is awesome and did you see the frags? They actually sell those to the lfs's in town here... nice stuff! Overall its a great park. It has lots of interesting shows, animals and the steel eel is insane! Link to comment
nanoty
Great pics, I always wanted to go to that camp when I was younger........so long ago. Link to comment

glennr1978
Like Ace Ventura with a doggy door in your fridge? Think I could DIY one of those? I do have a spare fridge in the garage!! Link to comment
CorvetteJoe
Think I could DIY one of those? I do have a spare fridge in the garage!! ----------- That reminds me, I need to call my sister up and go with her and my niece again. I only bought my pass so I could go with them and enjoy watching my niece (who is 2) see all the animals and share my enjoyment of it with her. THey also just built a brand new park here called Aquatica. Take the high end quality of Seaworld, but make it a water park. They have a lazy river that goes into a few grottos with huge tunnels full of cichlids, and another slide with clear tubes that goes through a dolphin exhibit, where they can swim around and jump over the slide tubes. The sandy beach wave pools look amazing too. AB really knows how to make a good animal theme park. Busch Gardens is amazing too (only an hour away). I [heart] Florida. We get awesome FL Residents discounts on all theme parks. Seaworld, Busch Gardens, Aquatica combo pass only runs me like $10/mo for the EZ Pass. You all in Texas should see if they offer something similar You only have to go twice to pay for itself in a year. Link to comment
hazmat
Duh! Sorry didn't even see the picture of the tank with the cardinal fish in it. Just noticed the shrimp in it! Talk about unobservant!! I LOVED the penguins!! we had to go down the majic carpet twice! That would have been so cool to be in the display and feed them. but tell us....what did the penguins do that made them not so nice?? Anybody remember Mr. Pepper's Penguins?? The book we read in elementary school? OK, I'm giving my age away!!! LOL Link to comment
TheCuban1040
Sweet pictures! I heard that they are building an aquarium in Phoenix, I'm excited to get a behind-the-scenes tour now. Where do they get all of those frags from? And the light you can see in the reflection off the waters surface looks funky, do you know what they are lighting their frags with? Link to comment
animalrie
Okay, I hope I can answer all of your questions... The penguins were very curious about the random people in their habitat shoveling snow. They also enjoyed the taste of greens (which are like rubbery overalls). Penguins pecking at your legs and behind when you least expect it is a little uncomfortable. They light all of their coral tanks with metal halides. The coral frag tanks have a more blueish light. I wish I could go to Aquatica, but the Seaworld in San Antonio is a little closer (and by closer, I mean about 9 hours away. ) Link to comment
