dlawlor
So I just went out and got myself an original NC12, old-school style. No moonlights, no fans, it doesn't have a duckbill on the output, just a nubbin with a small hole. One light in the hood, presumably never been changed. When you open it the feeder lid on the front flies off. It actually has 4 chambers in the back though and it's got two intakes in the front, the one up top and one on the bottom like the Biocube or Aquapod or whatever, which I found interesting because I'm used to my NC6 that I'm currently running (which is basically stock). Of course this tank isn't going to be stock, I'm going to be switching everything over to this in a couple months and I'm already planning out my modifications. I've got a NC12DX hood on the way and this is my first issue - how do I attach the new hood? The hood on this one is actually attached, the hinges are built into the tank (they don't screw off and I can't pop this one out). I'm also planning on putting a hydor-flo attachment on the output, probably with a MJ900 or comparable pump. Does anyone know if the hydor flo will fit over the output? It looks like there may have been another piece of plastic over it (like the duckbill) but it snapped off, all I have is a tiny plastic nub with a hole for the water. If I can get ahold of a camera I'll put up some pics, I know these threads tend to die off with a lack of pictures, but any help you guys could give would be greatly appreciated. If anyone has the OG model, what have you done to it? How do you like it? Link to comment
airangel
I've got one. My feeder lid stays put though. Mine is still stock but I changed the single bulb for fw and converted the tank to fw planted, lol. Wasn't worth the aggrevation of changing it since I got the 24gAP (spent fortune changing that one). The loc line I tried won't fit on the nub, haven't tried to see if nub comes off. The hood just slides off, I was amazed. I think the JBJ site shows it. I had to change ballast and needed to remove it. No fuss. I bought a diff pump (mini jet I think) but never used it. I'm still running the media too but added purigen (I had extra from the sw tank). No clue on the Hydor Flo, again never tried removing the nub, but its a rather large nub. I never got a duckbill, just the nub. I bought it from F&S back in 2003. Mine set up as sw is in the webshots album on my sig, it ran stock as sw w/o media of course. Sorry couldnt help much but nice to see the original model showing up. How to remove canopy, pump.... Link to comment
dlawlor
Yeah it seems to me like the nub is pretty much fixed in there, it'll be pretty hard to remove it. I guess I'll just get the hydor-flo and see what I can do to attach it, maybe I'll have to bust out the super glue. Does anyone else run this same tank? What do you guys use in the back chambers? If I put purigen in the 1st chamber on top of a sponge will it help that much (on account of the water coming through the bottom filter intake)? BTW airangel, how do you like the NC for a FW planted tank? I'm actually going to be using my current NC6 to upgrade my 5gal FW planted, that's how this whole project got started... Link to comment
airangel
some folks have drilled a bulkhead fitting into the AIO to attach powerheads/hydo flos/loc lines so that is a thought if you are into DIY For chambers in the AIO, folks use chemi pure/purigen, floss (from craft aisle of walmart), very few go with sponges/LRR /rings etc as they collect nitrates. I like the thing for FW. I know it was an option to purchase the marine version vs the freshwater one and I think on the JBJ site they have a FW display. Just flip out the bulb. I wanted a larger marine tank and had bad luck with the 12g one in 2003/2004. It didn't pay to re mod the entire thing in my opinion for only 12g. And you can silicon the bottom intake if need be, use some sort of plastic/acrylic piece and that should do the trick. Link to comment
dlawlor
OK thank you! I'll check into drilling a bulkhead, never done anything like that before so we'll see how it comes out... Does anyone think the ICA chiller would work with this tank? Link to comment
