Mr. Fosi Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 To my knowledge, all PVC cements are reef safe if allowed to cure for the proper time (usually 12-24 hours).
scottyreef Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 all i use is Oatey all purpose cement with no primer
Tbone675 Posted June 24, 2008 Author Posted June 24, 2008 all i use is Oatey all purpose cement with no primer brings up another point to prime or not to prime..... also slip fit bulk heads do you need to seal the barbed end that slips into the threaded end?
121a Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 i prime, i have my return primed purple so it looks clean.
scottyreef Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 i just sand around the pipe for better adhesion and just wipe the pipe off with clean rag i guess you could use some alcohol to clean it a bit better if you want
reefdan Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 i don't even let it cure (the PVC cement) for more than 5 minutes (just my experience -cure away). EDIT: i use the "red hot blue glue"
Tbone675 Posted June 24, 2008 Author Posted June 24, 2008 this site is so great you get answers so fast.....
SPS20 Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 15 minutes is long enough such that it is non-toxic. You can wait for 24 hours, but it isn't neccessary.
Sctn4Elk Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 i prime, i have my return primed purple so it looks clean. +1 Oatey primer, cement and cleaner...
MiddReef Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 I've always used the good old fashioned purple stuff and I'm yet to see any ill effects...I know a LFS owner who just glues and adds it to the tank whenever he needs any new plumbing, so I think as long as you let it cure for a bit you're in the clear!
J.J. Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 I use Harvey's clear primer, and Oatey's Heavy cement. I didn't bother giving any cure time either. Nothing seemed to care.
