light acclimation question

ok i just got my 250w MH package in the mail, i am resisting the urge to plug it in over the tank...... so my question is: 1 have a 150w mh over the tank right now, this new fixture cannot be hung, it has legs, so it will be about the same height, maybe SLIGHTLY closer, so my question is, in order to do this light acclimation, i will need eggcrate or some other form of light difusion. So how close can eggcrate be before it melts? also, should i only do 1 layer or 2? And finally i reduce my photoperiod by approx 20% , but how long do i go with that before i increase it to max? These also come with actinics, can i leave those running for the full photoperiod?

i know i am supposed to search light acclimation, i have been i can't find anything that clearly states enough beneficial information about it.

thanks much!

i think there was just a topic about this same topic earlier in the week... moral of the story was start witht the light up high with a light difuser and then lower it 1 inch a week and remove a screen layer every week till desired hight is achieved... ill see if i can find the thread

I have never done it, but I've heard that screens are the best way if you can't hang it higher. Just get a few and stack them. then slowly remove 1 at a time until none are left.

thank you much, sorry about the repetativeness, didn't know it could really potentially kill all the coral, now i am worried..... one last question: where do i get the screen mesh to go over the top?

any more advice on how to do this would be spectacular! thanks.

Same issue here, just upgraded from 70wMH to 150wMH. I have the hanging kit but can't hang it. I'm using something I got from Walmart, mines called mosquito screening but the pic on it shows it used to screen windows/doors. Its charcoal colored, soft vs wire. I had it in the house for a project that never happened.

Downside of it ..not able to retain shape so sorta sags into /onto tank a bit. Upside, 4 sheets are pretty dark. I just set it up and removed one sheet already ...I'm thinking its the phoenix bulb thats in it ...not as bright (white) as the 70w 14K bulb in my 70w. I don't see this lamp being as bright for some reason (the bulb??) for being over twice the watts of the prior one. Tonite when lite goes out, I'm going to remove another sheet. With the 3 sheets, all my corals have opened.....am just curious what things would look like w/o the sheets, to convince me that I really did up my lighting.

Also heard folks cut their lighting and increase it a bit each week. Good luck with whatever you end up doing to acclimate the corals and fish
