ramesis
Hi, I have been running my AP24 for 2 months now. I have not been using chemipure or purigen. Is there a big benefit from using them? I have been reading other people's builds and a lot of people put them in the reach chambers. I do not have anything in my rear chamber besides the skimmer and the chiller input and output. I have been doing weekly water changes and I skim every night. So far things are looking good. I have a lot of live rock too. Whould I benefit from using them? Link to comment

I keep both in my tank and have sparkling, crystal clear water. You wouldn't believe what they will do to polish your water in a matter of an hour or two. Be careful though, if you have a lot of polyps which prefer a certain level of DOC's chemi-pure and purigen will strip them right out. Oh and also make sure you wash both very well, and run phosgaurd or use chemi-pure elite (contains ferric oxide for phosphate removal). All activated carbon (which is in chemi-pure) will leach phosphates which will need to be removed. Link to comment
ramesis
What is chemi pure elite? Is it a different version of chemi pure or something additional? By leach phospates you mean after it saturates it needs to be replaced otherwise it starts dumping it back? I have a lot of polyps in my tank. So maybe i should not use in on the AP24. I can try using it in the 10 gal nano.. Link to comment
lakshwadeep
Your skimming will probably make chemipure and purigen unnecessary. If your tank is looking good and phosphates are zero, then there's no reason to buy chemicals that won't do anything else. Link to comment
TheCuban1040
I used both for the first 4 or 5 months. I took them both out and haven't noticed any difference. I'm pretty sure they are placebos. Link to comment

Hola! hehehehe Like Lakshwadep says, I think I am going to stick to the nano skimmer... I like my remora nano. Link to comment

If you run your skimmer at night you can keep the chemi pure or purigen (or both) in 24/7. In my experience they don't seem to take out a whole mess of DOC's (just mainly the raw nutrients like nitrates and ammonia) but they do polish the water quite nicely and give you crystal blue water. If you skim every night and your water looks fine and everything is happy I wouldn't worry about it (don't fix it if it ain't broken). But I used to have a skimmer and thought my water looked clean until I plopped in some chemi-pure (guess my skimmer didn't work too well). I guess one of the pluses for chemical filtering is they don't remove any phyto like your skimmer will if you run it during feeding time. Oh, and all activated carbon leeches phosphates. It is a byproduct of the manufacturing process IIRC. That's why if you ever run carbon (to remove medication or toxins) you should use quality activated carbon. The cheaper coconut shell carbon is notorious for leeching a lot of phosphates. Put some carbon in a little glass of your aquarium water and let it sit for a while then check the phosphates with a test kit. You'd be amazed what the results are. Chemi-pure elite is the same as the regular chemi-pure, with the addition of ferric oxide which absorbs the phosphates its own product leeches out... Kind of ironic huh? Link to comment
Zombo
I never have used Chemi-Pure. I'm a huge fan of both Poly-Filter and PURA Filtration pads, as they can be cut/snipped to whatever shape you want and fit into damn near any filter you can imagine. On my 4g pico, I'm running with a tiny HOB filter packed with PURA, and 5.5# LR. Water is crystal clear and has tested (-) for phosphates, nitrates, nitrites and ammonia since day two.
