Urchinhead
I am getting some corals that are coming from a 400w MH system and going into my 250w MH system. I have searched and found allot on going from lower to higher lighting but nothing on going the other way. My assumption is that higher is better then slowly move them down but I wanted to check to be sure. TIA Urchinhead Link to comment
SPS20
Sudden decreases won't hurt anything, provided there is still enough light to reach the compensation point. It is a good idea to feed any corals going through such an adjustment a little more until they have adapted to the lower light, as the coral will be producing less food through photosynthesis until it can adjust its pigmentation and grow more zooxanthellae to compensate for the loss. If you think about it, almost every single maricultured or wild-caught coral has to make this adjustment when it is brought into a captive environment. Link to comment
Urchinhead
Thank you. And good point on the feeding. I will do that. Link to comment
Phixion
I wouldn't recommend top placement off the bat though. I've had SPS before that came from 250w MH and I put at the top of my tank with my 96w of T5's and the frag was bleached within 2 days! I know T5's are very intanse at the surface, but didn't know/think they were even more intense than 250w MH even with a minimal setup... Individual refelctors DO indeed make a big differance as I found out in that instance. Good luck mate! Link to comment

Good luck mate! +1 It seems like it'd be no big deal since it came from a tank with a higher wattage light, but I'd still start it off low and work its way up to where you want it. Link to comment
