AlastairV
pics after one week i did some rearranging a few days ago overall, cave on the left, ledge on the right, GIANT aptasia in the front celebrity status, the lfs that sold me the liverock is adamant this is a "rock anemone" and not an aptasia. " there are no aptasia where they collect their live rock." i've found a total of 6 before i rescaped the tank, now i can see about 4, one tiny one relocated itself today and somehow doubled in size within 24 hours. the ledge, feather duster and the traveling anemone, all the way to the left is a clam or mussel of some kind. they way its wedged makes it hard to photo. I didn't even know it existed until today when it opened for the first time. its prob 1.5in across. the cave, another feather duster i've been hearing a pretty constant clicking for the past 2 days, i'm assuming there is a pistol shrimp or mantis hiding in there someplace. right now i am running all the standard 12dx stuff, but have removed the splash shield on the hood and reversed one of the fans. mmelnick
First off to NR. But I have to ask, how long has this tank been running. You are new here and your LR looks really new so I'm assuming that your tank is new. If so why do you have a fish in there? Edit: I saw that it said one week. WHY DO YOU HAVE A FISH IN THERE????? You should wait for your cycle to end. Which will usually take at least a month, maybe longer. Link to comment
AlastairV
LFS suggested to add the clown in order to get the cycle going. I know there are conflicting opinions on this however so i'll avoid getting into a political debate about it. Link to comment
Professor
I don't know what you are trying to accomplish by taking the splash guard off, but you should put it back on. The way the hood is designed you may be letting yourself in for a shock or at the very least, rapid corrosion of the electrical components (and then a shock). You may want to consider taking the clown back until your tank has cycled. That live rock looks like it may get kinda skunky. -Prof Link to comment
lakshwadeep
The LFS is deliberately trying to mislead you about the Aiptasia. Aiptasia is actually a taxonomic family, so it includes many species that are sometimes called Glass or Rock anemones. Please do not listen to the LFS. Even the ones that try to get customers to buy a fish for the cycle would know that only extremely hardy fish like damsels would be considered. It maybe be that ammonia/nitrite levels haven't spiked yet to provide the stressful (perhaps fatal) conditions for the clown. Please don't consider this advice "political"; it is only to stress the importance of keeping all your animals, in this case the clown, safe and not stressed. Link to comment
AlastairV
isn't the fish supposed to die? then that accomplishes the same thing as putting in the dead shrimp right? brb about to go round 2 on the aptasia, i've got a bigger needle this time. Link to comment
matty0206
You are not going to be able to avoid a debate about what you are doing when you post this on a public forum. Are you at least testing the water? Basically if the water is fouled because of the cycle you are torturing the fish. It would be like you being forced to swim in a pool of urine. That being said if you are determined to not change your coarse you could start doing water changes and testing daily. Your cycle will go on much longer but it might be a nice thing to do for the fish you are slowly killing! Edit: I just read your above post! You need to take the whole thing back and pick up a book! The aptasia is the least of your problems! Link to comment
lakshwadeep
isn't the fish supposed to die? then that accomplishes the same thing as putting in the dead shrimp right? Why?! Do you not see the cruelty in doing this and the fact that people put dead shrimp in? Please think also about the price of a clownfish; they aren't sold to die and providing ammonia in the cycle. The live rock is having its own die off, and that is the only thing needed for the cycle to progress to completion. No dead shrimp. No fish. And absolutely no fish meant to die. Link to comment
AlastairV
you guys should calm down and stop taking yourselves so seriously. its actually been closer to two weeks. week one: pH 8.4 ammonia <0.25ppm nitrite 0ppm nitrate <5ppm week two: pH 8.3 ammonia 0ppm nitrite 0ppm nitrate <10ppm i'm just starting out, i've read a couple books, talked to a lot of people. read a lot on this forum, i'm trying it this way with the fish as was recommended by my friends in hawaii as well as the LFS. he seems to be pretty healthy and happy so far. if he dies, i'll let you know and we'll all know you guys were right, but i think there is more than one way to do this. I don't really see too much dying in my live rock, it was 6 hours from the ocean into my tank. I've melted 3 of the 4 visible aptasias Link to comment
debonedquail
Geez. Does nobody in the world still have a sense of humor?? I'm pretty sure everyone on here knows that no fish is meant to die. My friend is super new to this hobby and was possibly mislead by whatever LFS he chose to make a purchase at. So what. Why not ask what store it was?? Not many people can say that they never made a decision on an impulse. And I bet most people on here have been mislead or ripped off in some situation during their lifetime. It happens. You trust a person's advice believing that their knowledge in the situation surpasses yours and the next thing you know, you're forking out a ton of money for an unneeded automotive repair or buying a fish with your liverock for your virgin tank. He's obviously here to learn or take advice or take the flames of hell telling him he's an idiot since this is the internet and he's posting on it. Sorry if my humor was ill taken. I never thought about ####### people off. Maybe because it's not that serious and neither am I at times. You guys need to take a chill pill or listen to some Bob Marley and just chill. Chillll. Chillll. And say retarded things to entertain yourselves. With maybe a PS, I was kidding about that last comment and you should do this. Are you all that angry??? If so, do you want a hug??? I'll give you one... Link to comment

lakshwadeep
Alastair: Where exactly did you get your live rock if it was 6 hours from the ocean? Did you take it from a temperate/coldwater area, or was it a tropical reef? Link to comment
AlastairV
i hope that the majority of you guys don't represent this community. if i wasn't so thick skinned it would be enough to turn me off of the whole forum. even with the aptasia thing, i'm not totally disappointed with my liverock. only time will tell if my chemistry becomes stable or my fish will survive, but i am moving forward based on the advise of my hawaiin friend who has had saltwater tanks for 30+ years. with any hobby there are multiple ways to do things, common practice and something we call "internet wisdom" in the automotive community. I recognize the possibility the fish won't survive (i was trying to avoid this whole argument), but i'm trying it this way at the suggestion of someone who knows a lot more about it than me. I've read all the same FAQs as you guys who are now experts, but i've chosen to take that with a grain of salt instead of assuming its gospel. Alastair: Where exactly did you get your live rock if it was 6 hours from the ocean? Did you take it from a temperate/coldwater area, or was it a tropical reef? its flown in from florida actually and picked up from the airport and brought directly to the LFS, i picked it up from their tanks immediately after that. matty0206
You have years of collective knowledge on this forum and I am sorry to be the one to tell you..........The guy giving you advice is maybe a little off! To sacrifice a fish because one person tells you its a good idea is just plain stupid! Good luck but dont expect to much sympathy for being flamed! Even the guy defending you admits you are wrong! debonedquail
If he listened to me, he'd have no fish. I don't like fish. I also had no idea he was making a purchase. But at the same time, I really don't check any params other than SG. My test kits have always showed nothing after testig bi-weekly for months. And I've never really done anything to acclimate my corals to tank other than float containers/bags to get temp good and then take them out of the container and drop them in disposing of the LFS water. And getting rid of cyano by cutting water changes until it's gone.. Is that good advice?? Probably not depending on who you are and how particular you may be. That's just what I've done and everything has made it so far. That's just what I do and what I've figured out. Survival of the fittest. I'm sure he wants positive insight from anyone who offers so he'll go over the information he gets to mathematically determine the proper course of action. He's probably more of a nerd than I am and should get it all figured out. At this point though I'll bet he's skeptical as to anyone's opinions, including my own as he should be because there are alot of people who know nothing other than what they've read to be true. You go Alastair!! You keep that fish alive!!! You establish that undersea cube of life in your livingroom!!! He may suffer, but sometimes that's what life brings. At least he's not gonna become a $6 mantis treat. This is probably the most I've typed in a while and sorry to all those that read through it. I'll go back to my serious side tomorrow sitting in cars with my laptop on the dyno and come home to my tank. Then one pop up here again like Alastair's aiptasias and probably anger more people with my abrasive humor. Until then, help a brotha out. Link to comment

ficklefins
What it boils down to is the fact that not all experiences/suggestions are created equal and there is no real way to tell who is right without getting various opinions. I don't think anybody here blames you for taking the advice of someone who has 30 years in the hobby, but the questions that come up are in reference to why you believe that these suggestions you received are the best case scenario for doing your tank. There are various reefers who get suggestions from LFS and other reefers that just aren't correct, including myself, but they learn from their mistakes. The issue with your original post is that from our point of view you did not do the standard research necessary for a new tank setup. Most of the users who have posted already have enough experience in this hobby to realize that sacrificing a fish for the sake of cycling is a cruel and unnecessary method. I'm glad that your tank is not going through any cycles and that your clown is doing ok, but you really need to consider doing some further research before taking any further steps. My only concern with your current live rock is the existence of sponges and different macro algae. Are you aware of how quickly the sponges or macro algae on your current live rock will spread or die back? Again, I don't blame you for taking advice from more experienced people I just think you need to do more research. Link to comment

I would suggest to you, Alastair, keep an eye out for whitish areas or anything that looks like it's dying. Link to comment
