Phos-Zorb killing Toadstool Leather!

I had put a bag of Phos-Zorb into my filter to try to control a hair algae problem, and 3 days later, my toadstool started getting crusty stuff on it and wouldn't open.

I pulled the Phos-Zorb out and the coral didn't get better over the next day or so, and so I checked my parameters and my salt was really high.

Presuming this was the problem rather than the Pos-Zorb, I got the salinity back to where it needed to be and the coral started looking better (but still not good), but the algae also came back.

So I tried the Phos-Zorb again, and now my toadstool is bent over.

What could the Phos-Zorb be doing to the water to cause such a reaction?

(Obviously, I've removed the PZ again)

The pH is a little on the low side (8.0), could that be the problem?
