rsach Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 My 12g nano has been cycling for almost 3 weeks. I have been doing water tests on weekly basis. As of this last night the ammonia and nitrites went to zero, however the nitrates are at 20 ppm. The LFS guy said that the nitrates usually goes all the way up and then goes down, so they might be on the way up. Would a water change help? Also, I have three sponges in the first chamber, should I get rid of two? Thanks!
gulfsurfer101 Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 Just take them out, do your water change, clean them and repaet every one to two weeks. I would add a small cuc even though some might say no, you should be able to get away with it.
StevieT Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 your LFS guy actually said that? Your nitrates will be removed by water changes, not on their own at this point. So do a water change. You can remove the sponges and replace with filter floss, which should be changed every 3-5 days, it is extremely inexpensive and does a better job at catching detritus. Or you can remove one sponge have it sit out in the air. Then when you do a weekly water change, take the one out in the tank, rinse it let it sit in the air, then put in the one that you had out before. Swap them every week to prevent any buildup of nitrates.
rsach Posted June 6, 2008 Author Posted June 6, 2008 Thanks for the tips. That what I initially thought that a water change should take care of the nitrates and the LFS guy told me no you don't need to do a water change now. Sometime these guys come up with weird ideas, I remember once they told me it's fine to add cichlids with community fishes
StevieT Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 they want to sell fish, when you succeed, they fail. It sucks but a lot of LFS employees (possibly not the LFS themselves) really are bad.
