DC84
I bought a WYSIWYG torch from Drs. Foster and Smith. Unfortunately, FedEx was not able to deliver next day because of a "mechanical error"...so the torch spent an extra day on the plane. I received the coral today, and the water in the bag is murky white. In the tank, the torch is constantly releasing stringy stuff, but it's clear/whitish, not brown...so I guess it's not brown jelly disease but rather slime from stress as the reps from DFS suggested. I swished it around in a bucket of fresh saltwater, but it's still releasing some strings of the white slime. I'm wondering if this is harmful to the other corals, because my tank is cloudy white. Weetabix7
It might possibly be harmful. Try to put the new coral in place downstream from your other corals, so the circulation doesn't blow the slime onto them. It wouldn't hurt to do an iodine dip too. 1 cup tankwater 1 drop lugol's iodine 3-4 mins. You can also use Seachem's Reef Dip, according to instructions on bottle. Link to comment
Urchinhead
That is a sign that the coral is both stressed and pissed. Try to gently blow off as much of it as you can, put some carbon in your filter and keep it as downstream from other corals as you can until its done being pissed. Link to comment
DC84
I think the coral already has brown jelly infection. When I first put the coral in the tank about 12 hours ago, you could see the individual polyps and tips (not fully extended) inside each head...but now they're gone and there's brown gunk forming in their place. All my other corals have retracted much more than normal. The water has become brown and cloudier every hour. The reps at DFS told me to keep them informed on how it's doing. I took it out of the tank. I'm going to call them tomorrow. Here's a pic: I know that torches don't travel well, but I'm pissed off that the one time I have a shipping delay, it had to be the torch! DC84
That coral looks like its done for. Try and get your money back. I contacted DFS today with a photograph of the dying torch, and they were very prompt with their service and credited my account...so that put some ease on my mind. Was doing crazy water changes today to get the murky water out of the tank. Fortunately, my other corals don't seem to be affected...but I hope I don't get any surprises later. I actually took some of the saltwater and put it in a bucket with the dying torch to see if it could be salvaged, but it has completely melted into brown goo. Pretty much just the skeleton left. It smells horrible! Link to comment

It smells horrible! i just got a new torch last saturday and it had 5? heads. one of them didnt survive shipping and turned to brown goo and disentegrated when I blew on it with the water of the turkey baster feeder. Torches are a little sensitive to shipping imo. if there was any delay in shipping thats the reason it croaked. dont give up though! get a new one! I love them, I think they are my fav. coral. Jess heres mine. the purple with yellow tips is the new one Link to comment
DCG1286
DFS great customer service... Same thing happened to me...mechanical error just a few days ago...lost my fiji leather...they refunded immediately...i also have a ricordea shroom rock and a Mixed Berry Chalice in that order...the chalice seems to be ok, a little die off (they said i have 14 days so we'll see what happens... and the shrooms are perfectly alright. I just received an Orange Crush Acan, and Hairy mushroom this morning...they gave me a free saturday delivery...the order was suppose to go out thursday (it was purchased well before the cut off time for same day shipping...)... I love Diver's Den! DFS has great quailty and one of the best customer service! Link to comment
DC84
heres mine. the purple with yellow tips is the new one Nice torches. It really stinks because the torch coral was the coral that I was most looking forward to putting in my tank. I kept holding off on buying one, because I was waiting for a specific looking torch in mind. Finally saw one on DFS, bought it and had it die. I just lost my candy canes today. They were infected with the brown jelly disease from the dead torch. Link to comment
r20crazy
if you are not already doing so run some carbon filter media to keep contaminants low. Link to comment
uglyamericanV1.5
they dont look THAT bad their flesh seems intact inside the skeletons, like i can see the tentecles........... also, be really uplifted if the flesh around the opening is still intact, i cant tell from the pic, but that would be a good sign as well. i personally would keep the skeleton in the tank, running carbon like the other folks have stated, no excessive water changes (unless the tank is less than 30 gallons, then i would do 10% 2-3X a week, if its 30+ do about 1-2X 10% changes)......... you would be surprised that babies come out of dead skeletons all the time..........plus they look kinda cool and polyps will grow all over em...........so if they dont come back its a neat little zoa house. plus you got your money back, which is awesome. krankykris
yes, don't give up yet. you may be able to salvage a head or two out of that mess. just keep them in your tank with some flow and lighting and some might turn around. Link to comment
jamesnmandy
i have one which has been through three tank moves, one of them was in a truck for about 16 hours....not a single bit of harm done, no cloudy film, nothing..... Link to comment

That picture was taken when I FIRST noticed brown slime forming. I took it out of the tank after taking that picture and kept it in a separate bucket with tank water because I thought I could save at least 1 head. But there's basically no tissue left...I lifted it out of the bucket and each head was OOZING. Placed back in the bucket with changed water, followed by more slime development and oozing. I don't have a separate quarantine tank and there's no way it's going back in my main tank. But at least I learned something from this and I should probably also dip my corals from now on. Except for the candy canes, I'm relieved that my other corals weren't affected. My tank needs to settle down a bit too, especially since the weather has been like 97 degrees these past 3 days.
