HankB
Can someone recommend a bright yellow coral for a noob ref keeper running a Red Sea Max? (Stock lighting is 110W 50/50 10,000K/Actinic.) Sun Coral looks great, but it's not a noob coral. Yellow polyps aren't very yellow that I've seen. Got any other suggestions? thanks, hank Link to comment
matty0206
What about a yellow figi leather or a big yellow featherduster? Or if you could find one of these it would be awesome! http://www.reeffish.net/images/Yellow%20Cup%20Coral.JPG Link to comment

Got any other suggestions? thanks, hank I had a sun polyp in my BC29 (I moved it yesterday into my new 72gal) and it did just fine. It is a bit labor intensive in that I hand fed it every other day or so. It would eat lots of mysis, brine shrimp and just about anything else I put on it. If you're willing to take a few minutes to wait for it to open up and then feed it it will look great in a tank. Link to comment

I'm also concerned about tank conditions since ours is a new tank. Maybe we'll just wait for the tank to settle. SWMBO is a fan of yellow so I thought it would be nice to surprise her with something: Thanks for all of the suggestions. -hank Link to comment

Fishfreak218
yellow fiji leather, i have had mine for 2 years and its still bright yellow and i love it. also, don't be fooled.... the sun coral is not that sensitive, it just needs a lot of extra time for feeding because it isn't photosynthetic so it doesn't get its food from light. but be aware that most of the time it stays closed up (which means you will be seeing a pink coral, not a yellow one) Link to comment
GoingPostal
Dendro, you still have to feed it but they tend to be out more often and since they are expensive you won't have a whole colony to deal with, just however many polyps you want to buy. Or find a nice yellow-orange plate coral. Link to comment
yardboy
The statement that all yellow cup corals are dyed is incorrect. I've got several that are 3-4 years old and are still yellow. Fiji Yellow Sarcophyton's are naturally yellow too, unless the ones I've seen while diving were dyed before I got there. Link to comment
Dragonette
I wouldnt do the zoos because alot of them are yellow and turn green under certain lights (happened to me) There are yellow polyps that stay yellow, sun coral if you have the motivation to feed it... or a yellow goni (but they have a poor survival rate) good luck Jess Link to comment
Pickle010
+ another on the Yellow Fiji.... I love mine - and it's maintenance free. Link to comment
HankB
+ another on the Yellow Fiji.... I love mine - and it's maintenance free. My dealer has a yellow fiji picked out for us. I hope to get over there one evening this week and check it out. We have another leather - a finger leather I think? Any restrictions on how close we can situate these? I don't see anything about leathers stinging other corals (however I do see that some leathers can be toxic to SPS of which we plan none. Yet.) There is a comment that this particular coral has moderate care requirements - meaning not suited to a noob. Care to comment on that? Our most demanding coral presently is a frogswawn which seems to be doing OK. We've had it about a week and a half so I can't really say it is thriving yet. thanks, hank Link to comment
yardboy
I call these the "Tres Kahunas" as I started them from fingernail size pieces over a year ago. Lesson for me is that as they get bigger they grow faster. Problems with toxins produced by Sarco's can be mostly eliminated by judicious use of activated carbon. As you can see these are all growing togeter with sps. Link to comment

HankB
I just gotta say - every time I look at that yellow Fiji leather, I'm happy with how it looks in our tank. It's a great splash of color looks fantastic. The picture I took above just doesn't do it justice. I hope Cindy's half as pleased with it as me. thanks, hank Link to comment
HankB
And we're still with happy with the Yellow Fiji. That was a good suggestion: It's a great looking piece and seems to be doing well. Yesterday we picked up a two polyp dendro frag. That's going to go into that darkish cavity under the frogspawn (when it comes out of QT.) From what I read, they are a robust coral and the only extra requirement is feeding. We like to feed our LPS corals anyway so I don;t see where it presents any additional demands. (In fact, the open brain requires feeding too.) I thought a dendro would be better than a sun coral since it seems more likely to be open during daylight hours. No pix yet - perhaps when we get back home. -hank Link to comment
Izzy
Does anyone mind posting what they paid for their Yellow Fijis and the approximate size? I really like those pieces! Link to comment
HankB
Does anyone mind posting what they paid for their Yellow Fijis and the approximate size? I really like those pieces! Ours came as part of a tank package, but I think the seller carried them for about $50. The don't ship well and don't frag as easily as some other leathers so I suppose they'll always be a bit more $$$ than some. Because of the shipping issue, I would look for a local purchase where you can make sure it is healthy before you take it home. Good luck finding one. -hank Link to comment

yardboy
Does anyone mind posting what they paid for their Yellow Fijis and the approximate size? I really like those pieces! I paid $8 for this small (~1") frag from Seacrop over six months ago, found out that yellow leathers grow slow compared to other Sarco's, or at least this one has. Start Now Link to comment
