The Saltwater Kid Posted May 31, 2008 Posted May 31, 2008 Are they a nice community fish and reef-safe? One of my fishes just died and I would like to replace him after a few weeks and was thinking of this fish because they're so brilliant blue and yellow but wanted some info first.
TheUnfocusedOne Posted May 31, 2008 Posted May 31, 2008 Notes: As with most Damsels, the Starkii Damsel grows from a docile juvenile into an aggressive adult. As a result, Damsels should not be kept with small docile tank-mates, rather with other aggressive community fishes. Numerous juveniles may be kept together; however adults will often fight unless they are a pair. If you plan to keep several types of Damsels it is recommended that you add them at the same time to avoid territorial disputes. Make sure to provide caves or hiding places for them. learn to use google
RayWhisperer Posted May 31, 2008 Posted May 31, 2008 Stark's damsels are a great find. As for damsels, Starkii are less aggressive than other species commonly available. However, they are still damsels. By which I mean, they will become aggressive. The only place I've seen them recently is DrFosters & Smith. I think it was in the Divers Den section.
The Saltwater Kid Posted May 31, 2008 Author Posted May 31, 2008 His potential tankmates include a Starry Blenny, Flame Hawk and a False Percula Clown...think it would be trouble adding him to those? TheUnfocusedOne...I thought this forum was for finding out about fish so that's why I posted, your copy/pasted info is helpful...your smart ass comment wasn't!

The clown would probably be fine, they aren't at all afraid to be tough little buggers themselves. As far as the other two, I can't help.
Six Posted May 31, 2008 Posted May 31, 2008 I had one and he was awesome! Terrorized a purple tang in a 100g tank- ripped its fins ALOT. I wouldn't suggest them with fish unless the tank is hardcore aquascaped or huge. Great fish tho- I woulda done a group if I had the $$ to drop on them.
sl-atl Posted May 31, 2008 Posted May 31, 2008 Beautiful fish! In my experience though, damsels other than Chromis spp. will eventually become too aggressive for a 29 gallon. They may tolerate your pre-existing fish, but will terrorize most any new additions, especially if they are similar in size/shape.
The Saltwater Kid Posted May 31, 2008 Author Posted May 31, 2008 This would be the last fish added to the tank. Another fish I was thinking of is the Orchid Dottyback but I would really like a bright blue and/or yellow fish for the color.
sl-atl Posted May 31, 2008 Posted May 31, 2008 We've had a fairy basslet (Gramma loreto) for about a month now and love it. Lots of color and personality, and it isn't aggressive except to its own kind (it actually 'schools' with our clowns.) Similar in form to a dottyback but without the attitude.
Six Posted June 2, 2008 Posted June 2, 2008 mine was the last fish too. it doesnt matter with damsels, IME. GL.

Another fish I was thinking of is the Orchid Dottyback but I would really like a bright blue and/or yellow fish for the color. The orchids are supposedly just as nasty as damsels are, too. If you want some real, striking blues, you could try a Cherub Pygmy or African Flameback Pygmy angel. The Brazilian Flameback is said to be a real terror. Blue Assessors have some decent color and I believe can be found tank-raised, they're just expensive and it sounds like they do a lot more perching than swimming around. There aren't any real striking blue reef-safe wrasses, but they do have a wide variety of color, so you could look into one of those as well.
