SAS REJECT

HI ALL THIS IS MY FIRST POST

I HAVE BEEN KEEPING KOI AND MALAWIS FOR 7 YEARS ISH

THIS YEAR I GOT MY FIRST MARINE TANK (130ltr) A RED SEA MAX I SET IT UP 3 MONTHS AGO

THE WATER (R.O) AS FAR AS I CAN TELL IS OK AMMONIA,NITRITE,NITRATE, ALL READING ZERO

CALCIUM AT 430ppm,P.H 8,3, PHOS AND SILICATE ALSO AT ZERO TEMP KEPT BETWEEN 24 & 25 (COOLER ADDED)

STOCKING IS 1 MANDARIN, 2 CLOWNS 1 BLUE STARFISH, 1 ORANGE STARFISH( NOT WELL), 1SAND STAR,4 TURBO SNAILS, 1 BLOOD SHRIMP, 3 BLUE KNEE HERMITS AND 2 SMALL CORALS

ANY IDEAS WHY THINGS KEEP DYING 2 SHRIMPS, 1 ARROW CRAB, 2 HERMITS, 1 CORAL AND NOW THE ORANGE STAR IS LOOKING ILL

ALL WERE PUT INTO THE TANK WITH A DRIP

SOME ARE REPLACEMENT STOCK FOR DEAD STOCK

ANY IDEAS ???? AS I AM NOT ENJOYING TORCHERING SMALL ANIMALS

THANKS

I'm thinking you are way overstocked in a very short time. Add nothing else. Get all starfish out along with the mandarin. How many have you lost in the past?

I know this seems like a stupid question, but are you certain the dead invertebrates were really dead, and not just molts?

What are you feeding the mandarin? Can you actually see him/her eating? Is he/she well rounded with no visible indented stomach? If not it's probably starving to death. They usually need a very mature system with lots of live rock and a refugium to provide the constant supply of copepods they need to survive, unless it eats prepared foods.

Three starfish in such a young system is a worry. One would really be too many. They also need large, mature systems in order not to starve to death.

Good luck with your tank. Slow down, enjoy it, and read everything you can lay your hands on!

the mandarin is looking ok and well fed

i will not be putting any thing else in for a while i have lost 2 shrimps,1 arrow crab, 2 hermits & and 1 coral

no chance of copper contamination as i try not to use Chemicals if poss

the water comes from an R,O unit ( sediment, carbon, sediment, carbon, membrane)

invertebrates were really dead i have kept blue lobsters for a while but thanks they make me think twice sometimes b4 i take them out of the tank

thanks to all

I would say that you are way overstocked. Also you adding things really fast. I would remove some live stock, either take it back to the pet store or have someone hold it for you.

Maybe I miss read...so no worries...

but if you had a lobster with those inverts...

Sounds like you or your LFS are not acclimateing right.

If so no worries...

Try a poly filter and see if you pull any metals.

WTF...is not quit needed...I usally follow things a make

a post about...to me thats just like cussing.

Just tying to help..if point missed...keep on posting.

Sorry to hear about things dieing and props for posting here, risking criticism, to to find a solution.

And in case no one has said this :welcome: to N-R.

Is there any chance that your LR came from a FOWLR tank? If so it could be a source of copper that could be doing in your inverts.

Other than that, I can only echo the other's comments about taking things slowly so the bacteria that break down waste products remain balanced with the producers.

HTH,

+1 on taking the starfish back. They are sensitive to parameter fluctuations associated with new tanks and they are notoriously difficult to acclimitise.

Mandarin - what are you feeding him? Have you weaned him off pods and onto frozen? If so well done. They are even more notorious than the starfish ;)

Keep posting and maybe we can get to the bottom of it. Though I suspect it is just adding too much too quickly...

Just an afterthought - have you immediately added stock after the deaths? You should wait a couple of weeks after a death before adding anything else just in case you have a mini cycle.

and i will NOT be adding anything untill i have got to the bottom of the problem.

the mandarin is stil eating the pods on the rock.

That was why I asked. Do you have an alternative food source when the pods run out? I f not you will have a dead mandarin on your hands too :(

You can buy them on the net and some shops.

Very few mandarins will eat frozen food. Though some have more experienced trained them onto frozen (seedemtails is one).

It get's expensive replenishing pods - how big is this tank? (Sorry I didn't read all the posts) Do you have a sump / refugium?

Link to comment

maybe this might be a silly question but now one asked are they dying once there added to the tank or after a few dyas, what im saying is the acclimitation being done properly
