PBUEHH
I've been setting up a 55 for a while and while i always wanted one i somehow didn't get a nano set up till today! it happened as i moved my guppies (i adopt guppies fry from petco) and gold algea eater to a 20H I was struck dumb that i didn't do it sooner. Really it was mostly because I needed to scrub the 5g eclipse hex (poor man) and moved lonely gold to a better lit tank (his light had been out for a while. Seeing as i had a coupon i bought a zoomed 50/50 cleaned out both tanks with a mild vinegar solution and dumped in some reef sand that i have lying around.. I'm too lazy to upload the pics now and they are cloudy anyways so maybe i'll do it tonight.... or maybe now Link to comment
PBUEHH
poor man Sand bed is about 1 3/4 inches deep, you can see better in the next pic. right next to poor man is a 6.6 long, also acrylic. water still cloudy but should be clear in a bit, I'll be looking for decent live rock if i don't find the base rock i want. Cheers edit: crap i didnt think my camera was that bad, sorry for the shoddy fotos. ;P Link to comment
PBUEHH
so anyone have any comments? i've gotten a few views i see. i was thinking of putting low light animals in there, sun corals and mushrooms are at the top of my list, any more recomentdations? Link to comment
PBUEHH
i beefed up the filtration macho time, and if i added the live rock first im sure my water would have ended up gooey so no complaints on my part other then its sucks looking for live rock on a budget. Poor Man's filter mod was for adding a whisper 20, so much more flow in the tall 5g now, and surface agitation, i was sh!ttin a brick trying to figure out how to get more flow in there cause a koralia even a nano would have taken up alota room, and anything else just wouldn't have given the right flow in the right places. bio is going to be taken care of what ever lr i stick in there, hopefully that can go in in a week or two when my credit line clears. If you wanna try this mod i definitely recommend it. the whisper 30 is too wide but the 20 fits perfect. if you want you can leave the stock filter there fine, i did and whatever i used a soldering to take the extra plastic off. To fit it in, you just need to make sure that the part your cutting turns out symmetrical to the other side. i had before and after pics to illustrate but i think someone deleted them off the camera before i got a chance dl them. 6.6 might as well be called 8.5! i tried an aquaclear 70 on it but it blasted sand everywhere, not to my liking... so what i did was i got the 110! yeah i went bigger and better and it was worth it, not only does it add almost 3 gallons to the water volume, but the return chute is so wide that its not nearly as harsh blowing the sand as the ac70 was. So im going to turn that into a hob fuge! thats all for now.... 'cuase one day i'll be getting live rock.... one day. Link to comment
clownfish1124
hey how are you lighting the hex??? Link to comment
PBUEHH
its hard to find a fixture that would fit it, it's so narrow. I have a 10 watt 50/50 pc and im going to pile live rock really high at least half way. then im going to stick sun corals in there, maybe some mushrooms. Link to comment
clownfish1124
try the 20 watt version here's a link Link to comment
PBUEHH
hmm, i'll have to take a measurement... i hope i can cram it in there... *drool* THX CF1134! anywayses! I know alota you are going to hate me because you don't have live rock and some of you are going to think i'm stupid 'cause its kinda gross. Anyways between life and death lies a line where rock often falls. its not base rock because it has feather dusters: a bit farther back: but its not live rock either, well its certainly not good stuff. its got a little bit of coralline, and i do mean a speck here and there, i had to scrub off a little hair algae that was certainly thriving but i did get several hitch hikers including some hermits and 2 methrix crabs! unfortunately neither of the emeralds survived transit... and of course a few feather dusters here and there. But you know the kicker and i love this about me... i got it FREE! i don't expect too much of a cycle but i definitely need to wipe the 6.6 down if you guys can give me your opinions as to leave the 6.6 as is or take some live rock out, your opinions really matter but only if you give me a reason explaining why... 'because' is NOT an answer. thanks guys! Link to comment
clownfish1124
can you show an fts of the 6.6? for the hex i would break the rocks and use smaller ones to make a structure because it looks like the rock is as big as the hex! well just my 2 cents, clownfish1124 Link to comment
PBUEHH
fa Sho, give me a second. time elapsed 3 minutes: oops, missed a spot Link to comment
clownfish1124
wow that's a ton of rock! my rock formation is gonna look like peanuts to yours! Link to comment
PBUEHH
about six small pieces, about the size or a large orange, make the center archways. two medium pieces on either side though if i go crazy i'll take those pretty pieces out. i think it equals about 6 1/2 lbs, give or take. i dont know why i chucked those godzilla pieces in the hex... i have very little faith in the light i suppose.... zoas and shrooms in that one + sun coral if i find some. clownfish1124
you could try a slim peak formation. then you get more surface area and more swimming room if you decide to get a fish... Link to comment
PBUEHH
i went to my first AZ FRAG meeting today and a good thing too, because Bob Fenner was the guest speaker... my girlfriend is looking over my shoulder so its embarassing to say that i was too shy to talk to him.... he was funny and wrote a really great read 'the conscience marine aquariest' a must for all libraries. anyways right after i snagged some snails to control my algea, and i didnt get enough so im going to get more by saturday if they can stem the tide, if not i'll get some sooner. i also got a starter culture of amphripods (sp?) they are a cute cross between bunnies and crickets that live in salt water. Nah, no fish even a neon goby would increase the bio-load more than any corals would. pictures to come, but since tomorrow is dad's day it will be way later. Link to comment
matty0206
Very nice start! I might have missed it but are these tanks linked? Link to comment
PBUEHH
no they are separate. and i saw some bubble algae in Poor Man, so I'm going to go shopping for mithrax... it's Sunday isn't it? i might wait till the end of the week as long as non of my current understaffed cuc pop it >.< Link to comment
ksrinlv
If possible I'd try to manually remove it before you have a bunch of animals in there and cannot. Once you add an emerald crab you will have bubble algae forever because they eat it, but in the process they break the bubbles which spreads spores to create more, making a never ending cycle of bubble algae in your tank forever. If you are able to manually remove the bubbles now, you may be able to avoid the bubble curse, certainly worth a try! Link to comment
PBUEHH
its in such an awkward spot... will it pop on its own? 'cause if i clean it and there is even one spore left I'll be in the same spot i am now... Poor man is cleaner.. but just the sand, the rock is still covered in short algae. the bookshelf has a lot more diatoms on the sand but the rock is getting cleaned the f*** off! they didn't have any sand stirring snails so I'll be going there to beef up the crew and get some sand stirrers. I'm holding off pictures till its a bit more cleaned up, i also have to remember to do a water change on both of em... i might need to by a 5 gallon water container... or something, those buckets don't have lids! >.< Link to comment
veshman
Very nice rock! Just wanted to put it out there that I, too, adopt babies from petsmart... usually mollies though. Link to comment
totalimmortal363
I have a 5G Marineland Hex that I'm slowly bringing to saltwater levels. They're are 5 bumblebee gobies in it ATM. My SG is at 1.020, so I'm getting close. Link to comment

PBUEHH
i saw it, it looks very nice imo. Do you think you'll be mixing the fiji and the other stuff? or will you keep it separated? Link to comment
clownfish1124
i sorta mixed it, but with coral... who's gonna notice Link to comment
PBUEHH
el oh el No, not really. i got lots and lots of coralines aglae growth, feather dusters and SPONGES! little white guys that look like inflated french ticklers or something... other than that my pod population is growing nicely. i dont wanna add anything right now becuase on the 18th im moving to my new place. maybe i'll post agin when i am settled in. cheers, Link to comment
