bossdj
i recieved some cheato last weekend and have it in the back compertment of of my 14gal aio. i have a sponge and filter floss in the 1st compartment and cheato in the second, nothing in the 3rd and my pump in the fourth,The pump was upgraded to a mini-jet 606 (160 gph). I have a handful of differrent hermits and a handful of different snails along with 1 damsel. about 16 pounds of lr and i'd say 4 inch ls bed. the cheato has glass backing in its compartment where a cfl lights it 24/7. i also have lighting upgraded to 2, 24 watt 50/50 PC's (purchased from nano-tuners). The 2 cooling fans were added aswell. ok so everthing is in specs except for my nitrates always between 20-40. what can i do what might be the causes. secondly today was the first day i've touched the cheato and it was good i'd say brillo pad consistency. So i removed it to rinse it off( something i heard on here to do) and when i put it back all kinds of particles were all over my tank like a sand storm? any ideas why and what I might need to know about cheato? thnx Link to comment

Mr. Fosi
IME, flowthrough isn't as important as making sure it doesn't get too warm. Link to comment

johnmaloney
Rinse it? That is a first for me. You can cause osmotic shock by rinsing macros, I wouldn't do it. Get strong lighting on it and it should be fine. Give it time to? Has it been in your tank for at least a month? Link to comment
distantfire
Turn your cheato light on after your display tank light's are off. A reverse photo period allow's your cheato to continue growing. IMO 8-10 hours of light is all that it really need's to grow. I've used the little 10watt submersible light's in HOB's. And the 6700k white bulbs for the mini-aqualight to grow it as well. P.S. Your high nitrates could be caused by the salt that your mixing. Overfeeding, dead and decaying plant's, tap water, detritus build up. I would test the salt water first and go from there.
