Firefish won't come out (it's been healthy for a while)

Firefish just one day decided to not show up for the whole day. This was maybe 5 days ago. Did a water change but nothing new. I can see him where he is hiding and I took away the rock where he was hiding and he just sat there for a bit then swam into another hole.

I have no other fish mates in the 20 gallon tank. Only inhabitants are peppermint shrimp and cleaner shrimp. Also the normal hermit crabs.

I will test water tomorrow but it looks like the peppermint shrimp and cleaner shrimp are completely healthy.

I'm scared.. I had 2 clowns die of ich because of the absence of a quarantine tank... Now a firefish that will refuse to come out. It has no visible ailments that I can see. No white spots at all. I left the tank fishless for 2 months before I added this firefish.

Here's the cute little bugger.

Please help me save him! I will test water tomorrow!

Edit: And I also tried offering him food. Usually he goes up to the surface to eat the stuff there before it sinks. He of course also eats the sinking stuff. I also put food in his hole but he didn't even take a bite from what I could see... I've never had him hiding in his hole for that long. He usually only hid when he got startled. Otherwise he was out and about!

How long has he been in the tank. My Firefish hid for about a month only popping out to eat. If you notice him eating then leave him alone. They love to hide. Now mine is out all day long but if someone moves too fast then back in his hole he goes.

Happ Reefing!

I've already had him for maybe 2 months. Don't remember the exact date but I can comfortably say that he was completely fine with being around the tank. I would stick my hand in, and it would dart in its hole but after a while it would come out and "say hello" to my hand.

Edit: this isn't the typical "oh no what am I going to do my firefish won't come out I just bought him yesterday" type of thing. This is the "oh no what am I going to do my firefish won't come out he was out and about and perfectly fine for a month now" kind of thing. Kind of puzzled...

my firefish was boring! hardly ever came out and if he did he would just float next to his hiding spot.... He was the only fish in the tank.. after about 2 months I got rid of him.... has nice colors but is the most boring fish...

K some people from another forum told me that it's normal :-D.

Lol so much for panicking.

Did they say that it would return to being out & about? I have a firefish that I got last week, and this guy is always in my face... As soon as I get my camera out to take a photos of anything BUT him... I usually end up with a head shot, or a tail shot.. Or when I am looking at something - he'll dart in front of what I am looking at and hover there... Like.. "Look at me.. Look at me"...

I would hate for all a sudden, he would hide...

Yup.

Exact response:

My firefish does this sometimes. They like to hide. Sometimes he will hide for a couple days and sometimes he will hide up to 6 days. He also doesnt eat while hiding. Just let him do his thang!

and another reply:

Its a normal thing for them they will do that don't worry.

Get another firefish. Then you'll get sick of seeing the 2 everyday. ;)

They dont like chilling alone. Most likely he'll hide all the time.

mlivvy you may be on to something. I bought a yoshi/shrimp combo and since then my firefish is out all day long, where he used to only hang out for about 4 or 5 hours then go in his hole. Hmm

But don't I need a pair of firefish? I read somewhere that if you have two males then they'd fight to the death.

Does it have to be company from another firefish? Could I get a clown and would it do the same?

Thanks.

Oh yah and I saw him out and about so I fed him yesterday :-D.

I have a purple firefish and a clown fish and they are perfectly happy and social together. The firefish only hides about 10 min. after the last set of lights go off. He's in his rock all night, then as soon as the first set of lights pop on in the morning, he's out again.

Well, it wasn't all of a sudden, but starting last night he has been chilling in the back under the rocks.. He came out today, but once night fell, back into his 'safe-zone'..

Thanks for this post! I would of freaked out, if I hadn't known..
