aquascaper08 Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 I want to start a 10 gallon frag tank and have a few questions. First, I am using the 10 gallon because that is what I have and I am only trying to start with small frags. With that said I was thinking of using a 1" sand bed, egg crate for a single layer of frags, PVC pipe for the legs, a fluval 105 canister filter, and a 2X20 t5 light fixture. Any suggestions will be appreciated. (i have everything listed except for the Fluval (40.00 on Craigs List and Ligh 57.00 aquarium guys).

I would avoid it, IMO you should clean mechanical filtration in a marine tank every couple days, which is a pain with every fluval I've ever used. I would pick up a koralia or other simple powerhead. The koralias are great because they are inexpensive, but provide nice flow that is very spread out.

BKtomodachi Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 Well I would use live rock. It would probably be pretty easy to put some live rock rubble between the sand and the egg crate, I would think.

O-man21 Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 WAIT! Before you run out to buy everything, you may want to rethink the light! What corals do you want to keep? 2 T5's isn't all that much really. If you can, go 4x20 T5. You'd get much better growth and your coral options would be basically unlimited.
dtfleming Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 a 10gal frag tank is hard to maintain and keep stable. I would still use the AC30 you have and put some chemical media in that like carbon, phosban etc. You'll def need carbon after fragging. Dont go cheap on the lighting. Lighting is an import part of a frag tank. There are a couple 20" sunpod listed on here right now for sale.

I don't want to start a business or anything, just want to learn more about the care and growth of these guys. I have everything except the light and egg crate so the investment will be minimal.
