the gobies might be very aggressive towards each other, so add one when you upgrade

would a firefish be okay in that small a tank? I read it grows to about 2 inches.

Yea i kind of noticed that when they were in the store they were nipping at each other. LFS has a nice 5 gal set up, comes with filter and 12w light for 60 dollars. any better deals online?

well you'd probably have to upgrade lighting because that fixture wont be enough. Then you would have to add a heater and maybe a powerhead. also you might want a bigger filter like an aquaclear 70 for a fuge.

here's a price list:

5.5 aquarium: 15

glass top (optional): 7

lighting, 36 watt coralife, 60

heater: $15

filter, aquaclear 70: $45

powerhead: $15

Total: 157

compared to:

kit: 60

glass top: 7

lighting, 36 watt coralife, 60

heater: $15

filter, aquaclear 70: $45

powerhead: $15

Total: $202

Difference: $45

Well Just my 2 cents...

Thanks for the tally thats really helpful :)

One big problme is the i dont have the biggest income (being in high school and such) so i have to cut back on some things. like the filter ill keep my AC 20. but i know i need a good light. already spent 40 on the one i have now so thats kind of frustraiting that i have to buy a larger one.

PC lighting is also more expensive in the long run compared to MH. Because you have to change pc bulbs every 6 months. For your 5 gallon tank a 70 or 150 watt {depending on what you want to keep in the tank} MH light fixture can be put together very reasonably. Do a search on our DIY forum for 70 watt MH and see what you find.

Just dropped off the damsel and got a full refund so i bought some LR and cheato and converted my filter to fuge. Gave the flame scallop to a friend of mine. Hopefully now im up to snuff.

Wow that's an amazing sun coral! If you don't mind me asking, about how much was it?

It was 65$. Worth every penny :P

That sun is gorgeous, what are you feeding it? How many polyps on it?

Well im feeding it mycis shrimp every day (with my ever handy turkey baster). As for polyps thats hard to say right now, im at work, but its perfectly distributed all around the peice. ill get a count when i get home.

Also i painted the back with the Krylon Fusion flat black (thanks Distantfire).

Got a small 8 polyp peice of zoos with some wamin watermelons and i think hawks eye as well.

I picked up my sexies and just put them in the tank. They look great and their dancing away. Also picked up a really cool Zoa frag. Posting pictures as soon as everything is situated.

Also found out today that im having a small problme with my nitrates, most likely comeing from sand. How are you guys keeping your sand clean?

how do you change water? when you do, try and vacume up deterius... dont stir your sand bed up... that will really cause problems... get a nass snail and it will do that slowly for you...
