avaneaton2000
Just picked this up two days ago, there are only about two full polyps on it but I am hoping it will make a full recovery. I got it to eat already so that is a good sign. I think it might be a favia or something close to that, please let me know what you think. Link to comment
chvynva916
NEVER buy the crappy dying coral on sale at your LFS. It's a trap we've all fallen into. Seems like a great deal, and you hope to be able to nurse it back to life. Think again. Dying corals are not easy to save. Obviously there are exceptions. Still, my rule is buy only healthy corals. It's one of those initial expenditures that won't go to waste. Link to comment
avaneaton2000
I got it for free so I am not worried if it doesn't make it, and if it grows into a nice piece that is great. I am with you the dieing coral for half price sale is crap, another one of the stores around here tries to pull that all the time. Do you have any idea what it is? Link to comment
reefone
frag of the good part with the flesh. and it should grow down and around the rock under it. once they die like that ive never seen them grow new tissue over the dead skeleton. Link to comment

c est ma
I've actually seen B. merleti grow new tissue over old twice. Porites too, for that matter (but that's an sps, of course). Personally, I think "nursing something back to life" is most fun and rewarding. --Diane Link to comment
fish02
Personally, I think "nursing something back to life" is most fun and rewarding. I agree whole heartedly with this. The fact that you can get a really nice coral that has been a little scuffed up for dirt cheap, then getting back to 100% is always fun and rewarding. I did that with a half dead candy cane coral and then shipped off in a frag swap. Link to comment
dsoz
I have seen frogspawn grow new tissue back down the skeleton. I got a piece that had the flesh right up to near the crown of the skeleton. After a few months in my tank, the flesh was extending about an inch down. Now, a year later, it has the flesh a couple of inches down the skeleton, and is budding new branches off the flesh near the bottom. The heads have also split from the original 3 to about 10 (I just traded 4 of them away for some heads of a different color). Now I have another FS that was neglected for a while, and has the flesh that receded all the way to the top of the skeleton. I am nursing it back and the flesh on 4 of the 5 heads is starting to grow back down the skeleton. One head is not doing well, and will not eat when food is offered. It may not make it. I guess 4/5 is pretty good odds. dsoz Link to comment
avaneaton2000
Anyone have any idea of what it is? Does the picture just suck too bad? I guess I will have to turn it around so that I can get a shot of the polyp straight on. Thanks for the support from the people who enjoy getting a small frag of something and growing it out or bringing it back to health like I do. I would much rather know that an awesome colony started off as a little frag or an ailing piece that needed a little tlc. It hasn't extended feeder tentacles but it did eat a NLS pellet during the day when I was feeding everything else. There are two really small heads with mouths on the other side but I don't know how I can feed them 1mm NLS is too big, maybe a little piece of cyclopeze will work. Link to comment
Deleted User 6
I've been able to get "dying" coral for free as well before. More power to ya'. If it's eating, that's a great sign. Hang in there. Link to comment
fish02
Is there any way for you to take a better picture? A straight on shot would be much better. It is definitely good that it is eating. Link to comment
avaneaton2000
Yea, I will rotate the frag towards the glass some more. It's at the front of the tank so I was trying to face it towards the light. It ate another piece of NLS today and some cyclopeze, there is a little mucus coming off of it now but I assume that is from the feeding. I couldn't get the smallest polyps to eat that are on the far side of the rock but I got another mouth I didn't even now was there to take some cyclopseze. Link to comment
fish02
You don't really have to worry about feeding all of the polyps. I have an Acan colony that I only feed 4 or five polyps out of 30 or so and there are some that I can't even get to. As long as one is eating that's a good start. but you are off to abetter start with more than one polyp eating. I used to go nuts and feed the whole thing when it was smaller, 15 polyps or so. avaneaton2000
I'll take better pictures tonight. I am really happy it is taking food, and it is eating faster every day. I want the other ones to eat because they are not connected to the ones you can see in the picture, they are on the far left side behind the rock from the view in the picture. If I can get them both eating I think it should fill out faster with them growing towards each other. Link to comment
avaneaton2000
I think you might be right! There aren't many pics online to compare to, but I saw a purple Acan Echinata that looked just like mine. here is my much better pic: Free Acans WOOHOO! Link to comment
fish02
I'ma have to agree with reefone and yourself on the acan echinata. Nice score Link to comment
