bad hermit. BEWARE

I came home yesterday to find my scarlet hermit crab had been tampering with my GSP. He got caught red handed, it looked like a tire track through the polyps. NOw he's living in a cup inside my stand.... I'm glad I found the reason the GSP wasn't looking too good, I thought it was a lack of flow.

From what I've read scarlets are a hit or miss thing. But really, any animal is capable of causing trouble... you never know.

Unless you actually SAW him pulling the poylps out, I doubt he did anything wrong. My hermits walk all over my GSP and it retracts when they walk over it but about 20 minutes later it'll be back to normal.

Yikes, I love hermit crabs but only the blue legs. The red ones I read many times they cause trouble in the tank. Sorry that happened to you.

silly guy......the polyps just retracted when he crawled over them, they will pop back out soon enough, same thing happens when my snails and crabs crawl over my zoos or GSP....they aren't hurting anything!!

snatchbak I highly doubt the scarlet was doing anything but walking

across it and the polyps just retracted...Mine do this all the time and never hurt

anything. I highly doubt thats why your GSP is looking bad. Most likely low

flow or some other issue..

Actually you have it backwards..the blue legged hermits can be trouble makers

sometimes...going on killing sprees just to try out other shells. I have several,

and also Zebra hermits, Scarlets, and Red legged. I havent had any problems

with any of them. My zebra is the only one who switches shells alot. But I have

quite a few empty ones around the tank. I havent seen him kill any of the others.

But Red Legged are the least trouble makers out of this group.

my hermits are always going through my GSP. nothing bad at all to the GSP. actually, the hermits tend to clean the GSP when they wak through it. healthy GSP will pop right back once the hermit leaves. if there is a reason for your GSP not looking too hot, it had nothing to do with your hermit.

Well, I dun have it backwards because the ones I have had experience with that were the baddies in my tanks were always the red fella's. However everyone has their own experiences I was just stating mine. Blue = nice, red = trouble.

There is a big diff between SCARLET hermits and redleg or other red crabs. Scarlets are about the most harmless of the hermits, IMO

Did you try hitting it on the nose with a rolled up newpaper? Use a firm voice and say No No Bad HERMIT!

Seriously I don't think the hermit is a problem. It was most likely trying to cross to the other side. I think the hermit trail is cool. But if your GSP isn't looking good I would look for other probably causes - i.e. water peramiters, temp, etc...

Yes. Like I said I caught him red handed. He was picking at the polyps. They still haven't opened back up. The purple skin of the GSP is decaying now. I have a handfull of blue hermits and they don't bother anything.

I put the scarlet back in my tank today... He finished serving his sentence. I had to put him back in, he lasted 3 days in a cup. Let's see what he'll do next.
