Ocho Cinco
I just got a new Duncan and I'm not sure of it's likes and dislikes. I've had it for a week and it hasn't been open very much. Everyday I can see tenticles but it's never fully open. The ones at the lfs are more open than mine. I tried to look on the web but there's not too much info on them. What kind of flow and lighting do they like? As of right now I have it mid to upper in my tank and my tank has a good amount of flow. I have a 24 gallon ap with the 70 watt halide. Oh yeah, it took food when I fed it. Is there anything I should be doing different? Link to comment
Nick's Reef
High light and decent flow (just enough to ge the tentacle whipping around) and feed it often and you should have it growing like mad. Link to comment
Ocho Cinco
That sounds like where I have it now. It just never really looks fully open. Like I said the other 2 that the lfs got in look better. Link to comment

Ocho Cinco
Here are a couple of pictures on what the Duncans look like now. I think they open more at night but I'll check tonight and confirm that. Link to comment
Nick's Reef
Well you could have ora duncans and not Aussie duncans, ora's don't have as long of tentacles in my experience. But they're probably just adjusting to your tank. Link to comment
Ocho Cinco
My lights are now off and both heads are opened more. Could it be too much lighting? Or could they just be adjusting to it? Link to comment
uglyamericanV1.5
adjusting... they are pretty hardy... if it was mad it would close up tight......like REALLY tight no worries Link to comment
hazmat
I just bought a 5 head duncan from Zoanuts. They are so cool aren't they?? It has 5 heads but like 4 more little ones growing on the side. I have a Red Sea Max so I have the T5 lights. I placed mine on my sandbed with enough flow to wave their tenticles around. Not direct flow but I have a Hydro flow and a Koralia 2 that keep my water currents all over the place. Anyway, mine are doing great so far. I haven't fed them either. what are you feeding yours?? Maybe try to move them lower?? I read medium light and medium flow. Mine are open all the time too. Open at night and during the day. Link to comment
teajay33
mine took forever to open. now they are in very low flow and under PCs instead of 150w MH (they moved from the 75g when they werent opening regularly). funny thing is tho.. day 1 in the 75g, they had nice long tentacles.... now they only have short stubby ones. no full extension. dunno what thats about?? dmattlin
Dropping in here... I was able to get a Duncan today from my LFS. I got the smallest one they had (those suckers are expensive, I was told it is because they are from Oz) Mine seems to be doing good.. I have 4 heads on mine, a couple of them actualy had their mouths open today. They were a little shy about opening up, but eventualy did open. Mine is in the sand bed. They stayed open when I was using MH lights, stayed open with Actenics and even under LED moon lighting. I am not too sure what to feed it.. I will try some misys shrim tomorrow Link to comment
bluesky
My lights are now off and both heads are opened more. Could it be too much lighting? Or could they just be adjusting to it? It could be too much light ... I had my duncans at the top when I bought them ... and i observed that they do not open fully and sometimes shrinks ... i moved them to the sand bed and now it is opening up like crazy ... these things are pretty hardy. I feed mine mysis and some angel cube. I'm thinking of moving them lower. They were open all last night. It could be too much light ... I had my duncans at the top when I bought them ... and i observed that they do not open fully and sometimes shrinks ... i moved them to the sand bed and now it is opening up like crazy ... these things are pretty hardy. I think I'm gonna wait a few more days and if they still don't open all the way I have a spot lower with less light and flow I'm gonna move them. Link to comment
dmattlin
This afternoon I fed the tank with shrinp and the Duncan went to town.. it has been fully open since I got it yesterday.. This should be interesting to watch.. Link to comment
Tbone675
i have 2 duncans one green and one blue, i noticed that at the lfs under mh lighting they have long thin tentacles now under my 144watt pc the tentacles are short and fat. feed mine mysis. Link to comment
hazmat
Yesterday the Duncans were really stretched out. It seemed like they were twice the size. Then they all opened their mouths and spewed brown stringy goo. Kinda of gross but the fish liked it!! This went on for awhile and then it was over and they returned to normal size. My Yumas do the same thing. When you feed them mysis do you just put it near their mouth? I have some tongs that I can hold the mysis with. Only problem is between my fish and the peppermint shrimp the Duncans will need to get it quick! A couple of weeks ago I tried feeding my corals some Marine Snow....well, I only used a little bit but it brought on the cyanobacteria like you wouldn't believe!!! About 5 days after using it I started to get red slime around the areas that I "spot fed". Next thing you know my sandbed was growing hair!! so now I'm paranoid about feeding too much! Especially the premixed food made for corals!! I'm trying not to over feed my tank so my fish are hungry!! Link to comment
SaltWaterNewb
Mine is at the bottom of my 10g kinda under an overhang. The tank is lit by 96 watts of PC lights and the rock kinda shields it from direct flow. Mine was open with in a day of putting it in the tank. Link to comment
hazmat
So seems like maybe the concensus is that they do better lower in the tank?? Here are mine: I really need to get a picture with the pumps off. they look better without their hands waving in the currents! And I fed them mysis yesterday. They totally sucked it in. So weird!!! I noticed that everyone is mentioning how $$ duncan's are. Are there different kinds? this one is a 5 head with 4 more growing on the side and it was not expensive at all. I paid more for the Yuma than the Duncans. Link to comment
Ocho Cinco
With mine I just stick mysis into the tenticles with my hand and it takes it. I have to move mine lower. It still really only opens up at night. Link to comment
Ocho Cinco
Just moved my Duncan lower, i'll let you know how it does. Could a duncan do ok in a 3 gallon with a 18 watt coralife mini aqualight? Link to comment
syntax_error
I don't think light is that important with duncans. I got one with 7 heads which I put in the middle of the BC 29 (72watts PC lights). I've been feeding them every other day. Now I'm seeing 4 more heads growing. It's in medium flow. Link to comment
Ocho Cinco
Well the duncan I moved lower is doing much better. It must have been too much light. The heads are open all the time now. I just got back from the lfs and picked one up for my 3 gallon too! The lfs guy said it would do fine in there as long as its fed, like you said. Link to comment
DC84
I just added my Duncan two days ago. Within the first hour of putting it in the tank it opened immediately. The next morning before turning the lights on, it was wide open. The tentacles are not too thin or fat but in between. I noticed that it's constantly closing and opening. I got an Aquacultured one from Foster/Smith. It's fluorescent green. I was looking at the one's on Roe's Marine World, and I actually like the powder bluish ones more...and also the fat tentacles. Wish I saw them sooner. The price seems nicer too. Link to comment
Gomer
mine are about 10" away from a bank of T5's and are doing wonderfully. high light=dense heads. low light= longer stalks on heads. Link to comment
Ocho Cinco
My Duncan in the 3 gallon is not really green any more. It's more of a purple, but not a nice purple. Does anyone know what this means? Link to comment
