reefdork Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 I have had a nano 6 gallon (unmodified) running for a few weeks. I have it plugged into a power strip with digital day/night controls which is, in turn, connected to a power strip with a GFI cut-off circuit. All has been well for awhile, but yesterday and again this morning, I arrived to find the tank without power. It is popping the GFI interrupt. Well, something is. And it is happening at night. Thoughts? Advice?
reefdork Posted May 7, 2008 Author Posted May 7, 2008 While i was making coffee, it happened again. I noticed it was as the lights came on. The GFCI strip is rated for 120VAC 15A. Is it possible that the Nanocube pulls more than 15A at times? Particularly when bringing the lights and fans up?
B-Dogg Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 Is it possible that the Nanocube pulls more than 15A at times Doubt it, I have my setup plugged into a 20 amp circuit (15 amp outlet and 15 amp power strip) that is part of the bedroom circuit and I haven't had a problem. I would try removing your power strips one at a time and see if one of them is defective. Sounds liek you can now replicate the problem and shoull dbe able to tell right away.

Thoughts? Advice? It shouldn't pull more than 0.5A. I'd call JBJ and see if they have any suggestions on what might be wrong. If it's under warranty, they may be able to send you a replacement hood. The alternative is to unplug it, take apart the hood and inspect the wiring for yourself. My guess is one of the wires in the hood is loose and is occasionally shorting out and tripping your GFCI.
reefdork Posted May 8, 2008 Author Posted May 8, 2008 So, yesterday I swapped out the GFI power strip with another one I had. I had bought two. The second was intended for powering pumps in buckets when mixing salt, etc. The power has not tripped off yet and it is nearly 24 hours since I did. Can I interest anyone in a lightly used but defective power strip with GFIC?
