I'm starting to get cyano bacteria growing in patches on my LR and starting to grow on my acro in my NC12dx I don't know if it's just growing cause I just recently replaced the stock hood with a 70W MH. Could you give me some tips on how to get rid of it? Thanks in advance :)

It could occur if:

1) new lights

2) over feeding

3) low flow

As for getting rid of cyano, get other members to help.

(I cant remember much, just woke up)

It's probably the new lights cause I have about 359gph of flow and I am good about not overfeeding. Any ideas how to get rid of it?

When I had a cyano outbreak, keeping the tank lights off for a couple days definatley helped. That was only a temporary fix though. It started growing back fast so I reduced the amount I fed and the frequency. I also switched to a better variety of food (changed from prime reef flakes to frozen mysis shrimp and flakes just every once in a while). That seemed to help but would only hold the cyano at bay. To completley eliminate it, I used a couple doses of API's Algaefix. Only use the algaefix as a last resort though. I didn't appear to harm anything else in the tank but I was still hesitant to use it and was very careful not to overdose it. My tank is now cyano-free! Hope that helps. Oh...and I also siphoned out whatever cyano I could every time a did a water change.

why getting stronger light will get cyano? I have upgraded lights before and never got that ... just curious.

My phosphates are at zero and I've also been seeing diatoms so I think I'm gonna try the dark period thing how many days should I keep the lights off? Some cyano might have come on some new corals I got, although I did a close inspection on them and didn't see any problem algae

Phosphates are a tricky thing to test though. You could have them and not know it because the cyano and other stuff is cleaning the water of readable amounts. For the dark period, I've heard three days at least does it.

Cam , New lights most likely just broyht out the cyano bacteria , sooner or later it would of sprung up even with lower lighting , Click on the link below and use this product to get rid of it ( follow instructions ) . It is reef safe and will not harm inverts or corals . When it's gone , work on feeding less , getting rid of phosphates & matbe cutting down on the hours your lights are running , 8-10 hours max is plenty .

I'm gonna go ahead and keep the lights off for 2 days and do some water changes and see if the cyano dies if not then I'm gonna try some of the liquid medications to get rid of it.

I looked in my tank and now the cyano has grew even longer even though I turned the lights out so I'm gonna order some red slime remover stuff off marine depot I'll keep you posted on my tanks progress.
