CR22
Nano-reef has a thread for almost every animal...what about the pistol/goby pair? I made this thread for discussion, anyone to share stories and for prospective owners of pistol/goby pairs to come read why we love them so much! Now on to my pair...I have a watchman goby, and a banded pistol shrimp. They are currently living in a 3g deco until their new home (BC14) is ready. The day I introduced the pair, the shrimp immediately went to work. He started digging out their cave, and the goby started to protect him. It is one of the coolest symbiotic relationships I've ever seen. Anyone else? Link to comment
vg30et
I have a hi-fin goby and a tiger pistol shrimp. Both paired up immediately when introduced in my NC6 in Sept 07 and went to work digging a series of tunnels under the LR. They are timid but will come out and feed when I place sinking pellets in front of the opening to their cave. I have recently moved them to a 30 gallon with coarser substrate and they are both happier than ever with even more elaborate tunnels. Both happily eat either sinking pellets or mysis shrimp placed in front of their little cave(s). Link to comment

vg30et
Are they alone? Tiger pistols are beautiful! How big is he? Yep, nothing else in the tank except for the goby/shrimp pair at the moment. The shrimp is about 2.5, maybe 3" in size. Link to comment

TheCuban1040
I just got a Yasha Hasha + Tiger Pistol pair last weekend. They are still being shy but I'll try and snipe some pictures of them by luring them out with food... Link to comment
CR22
I'm going to the to get a picture up tonight, I'm on my stupid blackberry and its not letting me post them. Oh and the yasha hasha are beautiful, love the coloration! Link to comment
scott45acp
how deep of a sand bed do you need for them to build the cave? my sand bed is less than 1 inch. DSB is in the fuge. Link to comment
CR22
Mines about 2 inches. Give or take... Link to comment
TheCuban1040
My sand bed is probably 1.5'' in most places. The pile of sand that the pistol made around the burrow makes his hole about 2.5'' deep, and who knows how long those tunnels are. Has anyone ever had a tank with the bottom visible so they could see the extent of a pistols tunnel system? I'm going to do some google-image searches... Link to comment
CR22
That would be a pretty good idea. I have a deco and its possible to scoot it to the edge of the table its sitting on and see if you can see his tunnels. I know one of their tunnels goes from one side to the other, cause I walked into my room the other day and scared them into their tunnel...then the goby popped out the other side... Link to comment
TheCuban1040
You should try it! And take pics because I can't find anything on google. My FW tank would have been perfect for this. The stand is open in the middle and the tank just sits on a rim going around the outside. Too bad there isn't anything exciting living in there. Link to comment
CR22
I never got into freshwater...unless they find freshwater corals, I won't be getting into it anytime soon. Ill try when I get home... It might be 9 or so but I will def try! Link to comment
TheCuban1040
Yeah, if you started with SW you will probably never want FW. Usually people gain some knowledge with FW then move to SW. But with places like NR it's so much easier to get good info that it's easy to start with SW. "Back in my day...!" I'm too young for statements that start like that... but 15 years ago you'd be tarred and feathered for trying to dive straight into SW. I look forward to those pics! Link to comment
CR22
When I decided to drive into saltwater I went up this lfs (def not my favorite one) and asked them if it could be done..."near impossible" were her words. Now I have 3 sw tanks that are doing wonderfully might I add. TheCuban1040
Ha, some people have a hard time evolving with the times... Especially LFS people. Kinda foolish though, she could have made stacks of cash off of you! Link to comment
o0xerog0o
Finally, a thread about Goby/Pistol ownership! I plan on getting a pair tomorrow as long as the store still has them in when I get there. I was watching some videos of them on Youtube last night, and those pistols are comical to watch. I'll post some pics if I'm able to get them. Link to comment
FateX9
im just waiting for someone to post a pic of a dracula goby/shrimp pair! someone here has to have one, or will i be the first?! Link to comment
CR22
I know I've spent well over $1000 on my aquarium. Dracula? Xeroq-Oh my gosh you will love them...mine throws up the sand with his back legs like a dog. Its amazing. Link to comment
TheCuban1040
Check out this video I shot of my Pistol. This was taken about 3 minutes after I dropped him in the tank. He hadn't buddied up with the Yasha Hasha yet. Link to comment
Nick's Reef
Pssh I started a thread like this a few days ao but it's only for yahsa hashes. Link to comment
CR22
Sorry did mean to copy any idea. I just thought pistol and gobies deserved a thread Link to comment
aquav
I don't have a pistol shrimp, but my goby and my firefish have paired up. Ever since I added the goby they have been living together in a PVC pipe in my tank. So maybe a goby is just a very social animal that needs a partner and if there is no shrimp...oh well, another fish will do. Link to comment
