mmelnick
I have a few newly found stocks of aptasia in my tank. I am thinking of hitting them w/ a large glob of super glue gel while they are out and then hoping that they will retract and glue themselves together inside of their holes. I will then fill the opening with more super glue gel and entomb them inside their lairs of evil. Before I go postal on these little demons I just wanted to get a second opinion since this is not the traditional method of removing aptasia. Does anyone have any input? Thanks, marc Link to comment
geekreef_05
lol. If you break or injury the aptasia it'll release spores into your tank creating more aptasia. But if you think this is possible without breaking a stalk or stressing it out greatly... go for it. The key here is a quick death so no spores are released. Good Luck. Please post pic's if possible, lol. Link to comment
vg30et
Might work but I haven't tried this particular method. I usually use thick kalk paste and inject a small amount in their mouths. Recently used a small amount of iodine in their mouths and it seemed to do the trick as well. Good luck! Link to comment
Cesar
I'm using Blue Vet Aptasia remover and it works wonders. One thing I hate though is that for me to be able to hit them with this they need to be a bit large because the syringe that it comes with is pretty thick. By the time they get a good size for me to blast them I notice that there are a few more on the sides which I have to wait for those to get big. Link to comment
PurpleUP
How bout using a semi-proven method like Joe's Juice and following up with superglue to seal them up after they die? I think the issue with your theory is that your Aiptasia needs to be in an isolated spot in order to apply your super glue with success. What if it lies within a patch of zoanthids or other sensitive corals that you wouldn't consider gluing together? FYI, Joe's Juice also sells metallic angled tips, which allow you to secrete a smaller concentrated dosage directly into the mouth of the Aiptasia - avoiding contact with the rest of your corals. I think kalk paste that is "fed" gently to the aptasia is the best method. I have used it to kill many many aptasia with a 90% or greater kill rate. And it is an added plus that I am only adding something to my tank that I am going to add anyways. This method works for large and small. Mix up a small paste using kalk, then turn off the pumps and using a plastic pipette give the little bugger a small meal of kalk paste. Give it a try. Link to comment

That's a great idea IF IT REALLY WORKS to kill them off. I think I might try it myself if this Joe's Juice stuff can't wipe them out on it's own. Link to comment

I think I might try it myself if this Joe's Juice stuff can't wipe them out on it's own. I am saying that in my experience IT REALLY WORKS. I have probably killed somewhere around 50 - 60 this way. A few times I have had to try several times on the same aptasia, but usually once is enough. The times where I have had to try twice were because I scarred it back into its hole before I could feed it enough paste. Plus it is cheap. Try one group with Joe's and another with kalk, report back which worked better, or if there was a difference. I would do this experiment, but all of my aptasia are dead : ) I am saying that in my experience IT REALLY WORKS. I have probably killed somewhere around 50 - 60 this way. mmelnick
How much do you guys pay for joes juice? It's about $16 at my LFS. Link to comment
jared850
or you could just buy a peppermint shrimp or two and it would only take a day or two for them to eat all of the aptasia. Good luck catching them if you dont want them though. Link to comment
Chris2500dk
I just jab a syringe with Hydrochloric acid into them and give them a little squirt, I haven't had any survive even one treatment. Since it's just a fraction of a cc that's used the rest of the tank doesn't suffer any ill effect. Link to comment
SeeDemTails
Isn't Joe's Juice and Kalk paste basically the same thing? It works ok, but it isnt always 100% leathal. The only 100% effective method I have ever used, if you can even do this, is to take the rock out of the tank, and hold a lighter flame up to the aiptasia....it will start to boil and fall off. I got the rock from a guy about 2 months ago and the peppermint shrimp have been in there the whole time. I think that I will go w/ the syringe method if I can get one. The B**** at the pharmacy in my grocery store apparently thought that I was some sort of crack head when I tried to get one. Link to comment

Biggen
Why not just use Joe's Juice (like everyone suggested) or use lemon juice? Both are great at removing Aptasia if they are injected into it... I'd rather do that than mess with having to use super glue gel all over the place. Although I suppose it would work... The main reason is that I already have super glue. I don't really want to spend $ on joes juice to kill one stock of aptasia. I went after on that was on a small rock on the top by taking it out of the tank and squitring boiling water on it several times and then letting it sit in some satl water over night to make sure that no spores were released in to my tank. I only have one more that I am aware of and although $16 is worth not having an infestation, it seems like a lot for a chance of killing it. Where have you guys got your syringes? I have not had good luck but have only gone to one pharmacy so far. Link to comment
divecj5
Not sure where to get the small pipettes other than probably ordering them online. You might be able to find that at a CVS or similar pharmacy or just ask the pharmacist if they have any small plastic syringes. I know that when I bought my small bottle of Joe's Juice, it came with a really nice syringe that has a really small tip on the end that is great for getting in the crevices. I have had great luck with Joe's Juice and it has only not killed a couple. They are usually toast in seconds. Link to comment
buckeyes2k7
You could get a syringe from your local heroine addict Link to comment
Mercuryne
i havent been doing the reef that long. just a year. but ive had them since the start. I have pepp shrimp and i also use joe's juice. from everything ive read .. once you have them.. you have them.. I dont know if there is a sure way to get rid of them other than boil all your live rock.. its part of the hobby for some of us.. there are more that you cant see.. just use juice and or pepp shrimp and keep em in check. DiscoFool
Best way to get rid of Aptasia is by using a Peppermint shrimp! They love those things and will wipe every last one of them out....trust me. But make sure it is Lysmata wurdemanni! There are different kinds. The wurdemanni are the ones you want. No chemicals, no clue, no bs. Link to comment
jenisiz
Actually the BEST is kalk or joes juice...if not that then a Kliens Butterfly...I've owned 2 over the years and neither have let me down....but they can and sometimes will nip at zoos...but they wiped about 90lbs of live rock clean for me in a week (I got a good deal on the rock b/c it was so infested)...pep's are safer but require additional suppliments and are intolerant to copper... Trapper125
I have several aiptasia that are multiplying and need to eradicate soon. Red Sea Aiptasia-X seems to be the bomb from the videos posted. Total implosion looks very entertaining. It's only 10 bucks or so, and I will be buying soon. It stimulates feeding of the anemone and seals the oral disk shut. Looks like fun to me. Link to comment
