Djbacon
Hi everyone, quick question/problem about a week ago I added my CUC consisting of 4 trochus snails, 3 nassarius, 1 scarlet hermit and a fire shrimp. Running a 14g biocube and let it cycle about a month before adding anything. (using all cured rock and live sand and confirmed good levels with the LFS. felt i did a good job during the cycle, keeping the lights down to a minimum to minimize aglae growth etc. My levels are pretty steady.. PH8 SG 1.022 Temp 78 NH3/4 0 N03 < 12.5 My problem is 2 of my trochus snails were found dead this morning...on their sides....#### up. They are much larger than the hermit so i do not think he is responsible, (cant be sure) I think they starved to death...I have no fish in the tank and although I did have a little brown algae prior to their being added the CUC seems to have made short work of it quickly...Is it possible that the lack of a food source (excpet for the shrimp) and keeping the lights off made for too little production of food (algae) for the CUC? The tank is full of pods and the shrimp and crab seem to be fine. Cant really judge the health of the remaining snails... I feed the shrimp a couple mysis shrimp every other day. My big concern now is how the nassarius snails are doing that live under the sand. They rarely come out and I do not want to find one of them rotting later. Also do not want to stir up the sand to much and mess up my bacteria. Thoughts? Link to comment
supreme_spork
are you running your lights now? it's possible the snails died from acclimation issues -- 10 days is right in the window. if everything else in the tank is fine that's definitely a possibility. the above said, 4 trochus is too much for a 14g BC i think... 2 is more reasonable IMO. JustReef
How did you acclimate? How are you checking your SG? Link to comment
Djbacon
How did you acclimate? How are you checking your SG? Drip acclimated over about an hour...checking SG with a hydrometer....1.022 pretty consistently, get my water from the LFS. After talking with my wife, turns out she saw the scarlet hermit picking at the snails on a few occassions. sounds likme he may have killed them after all. Everything else in there was acclimated the same and is thriving. Checked all levels again and things look fine. Link to comment
