jeffblly
My pink zoas have a disease and Im not sure what it is. Im thinking its Zoapox. Can someone verify this? Ive lost 5 heads of pinks already and I dont want to lose the rest. I noticed about 3 days ago that they had white dots that looked like ick on corals and now they are melting away and fast. My Zoas have been growing very well for 7 months now and 3x as many heads as when I first got them. A week and a half ago I started using Chemi-pure elite and now this happens. I read on ZoaID that carbon might be a cause and Im beginning to think my chemi-pure had something to do with it. The rest of my zoas seem to be fine so far. What should my next step be? Weetabix7
Those zoas do look unhappy. Not 100% sure it's zoapox, but it looks like it could be. Looks like there might possibly be some fungus as well. At any rate, the cure for zoapox should take care of it, even fungus. Here's what you do. You will need to do this dip for 3 days in a row. Put one dose of Furan-2 in 1 cup SW or tankwater and mix well. Place the zoas in there for 15-30 mins. I'd start out at 15-20 mins and only do longer if they don't improve. Rinse the zoas off before returning to tank. The medicated water will look like an awful greenish-yellow, but I've done this dip several times and it won't hurt the zoas. If the zoas only partially recover after 3 days of dip, wait 3 days, then repeat. Keep us posted on your results. Those look like pretty zoas, I'd hate to see you lose them. Link to comment
eklikewhoa
I agree you need to treat them before you lose them all. I would not blame chem-pure, I had my tank filled with only zoas before and had only chem-pure and a fuge running in the back of my NC12g and they did great. Even now that there is less zoas there is still chem-pure in the back with no problems. Link to comment
jeffblly
Thanks for the help weetabix I have Furan 2 on its way. If Chemi-pure was not the cause then what is? I was using regular chemipure and then I just switched to elite and this happens right after I changed. Thats the only thing Ive changed for awhile besides the weekly water change. Im trying to understand how this could happen to an otherwise healthy tank and zoa colony. Ive included a pic of the healthy zoas. Link to comment
Weetabix7
Yep, they're nice. Are you SURE there's nothing else at all that you've changed, no matter how small? Link to comment
jeffblly
Chemi-pure and water changes is all that I have changed in the last few weeks. I read on zoaid that carbon could be a cause and was thinking it was the chemi-pure. I did switch out old pc bulbs to new bulbs but that was over a month ago. I want to find a cause so I wont lose anymore colonies. So far the rest of the zoas look ok. Also how does it spread? Through the water or by contact from one affected zoa to another. Thanks. eklikewhoa
Maybe when you pulled the old chem-pure bag out it stirred up all the detritus that settles and caused spikes here and there... Link to comment

Its zoapox. you can use furan2. But then you still may not be able to save it ... there are way too many zoapox on it already. Good luck. Did you by any chance introduce any livestock into your tank other than water change and the chemi-pure? Btw, that looks more like paly though ... Link to comment
jeffblly
You raised this thread from the dead Yes they are Palythoas now that you mention it. I lost the colonly but thats the only colony I lost. One by one they got worse and worse until they were melted away. Luckily I had fragged some and now they are in the place of the old ones and doing good. I think I did introduce my clown around that time. I dont remember exactly but it was around that time. Does this mean I should dip my fish in Furan2 and Lugols? Link to comment
fiction101
hmm you know what the same thing happened to me also, After I added chemi-pure I had a zoapox outbreak but it's impossible to know for sure if that's the reason why.. Link to comment
jeffblly
I wonder if there are more outbreaks of zoapox with chemipure. Like I said before carbon could be a factor in zoapox according to zoaid. The Sunpod is awesome btw. Colored up my green zoas fast and getting more growth from everything, including the Xenia. SeeDemTails
Moral of the story, have furan 2 on hand and treat at the first sign of symptoms. Your case was a great example of a disease vs water quality. All your other zoas were fine and stayed that way, except for the infected colony. I always suspect water quality every time someone makes a zoa pox post about every colony in their tank crashing. It doesnt happen that fast. Link to comment
