Militant Jurist
So I bought a LR today at the LFS (which is Phishy Business) and apparently I got an Acan? ID Thread. What should I do to try to help it survive it's current sad state? Link to comment
Rubicon06
Looks similar to a pineapple brain to me, though I haven't seen a pink one... Link to comment
FateX9
looks like a favia to me Link to comment
Militant Jurist
It's purplish on the backside, but he top is white and brown (the brown I'm guessing is just about dead). The thing was kind of upside down in a pile of LR, but it was cool looking, so I grabbed it. Little did I know that it was almost entirely hitchhiker! I'm not picky about what it is... I just want to know how I can save it! (poor little thing...) Link to comment
Rubicon06
Is your tank still cycling? if so it'll probably die... Link to comment
JustReef
Regardless of what it is I would put it in low flow, moderate light, and feed it if it will eat. Link to comment
Militant Jurist
The tank has been at 0 ammonia, nitrite and nitrate for 1 week now, post cycle. What should I feed it? (I thought acans were photosynthetic?) Edit - I have 15w of actinic and 15w of 18000K lighting (it's a 10 gallon tank) and I've put it about 1" below the water line. Good enough as far as the med. lighting suggestion? Link to comment
p-daddy
+1 on the favia/pineapple brain (I am by no means an expert though) Acans and Favia are both photosynthetic, but benefit from supplemental feedings when their sweeper tentacles are extended (usually at night.) There are several products available for feeding corals. Cytopleeze is what most people on this site swear by, I have heard good things about Coral Frenzy too though. Link to comment
kgehrke
I've seen a dead acan with a purple skeleton like that. That one doesn't look like it's in the best shape, but I've seen some crazy bad looking corals recover. Try it for a week or two and see if you can see any life. Link to comment
wtfe
So I bought a LR today at the LFS (which is Phishy Business) and apparently I got an Acan? ID Thread. Militant Jurist
hah. i was at phishy's today buying salt and FWE... probably just missed each other. Could be.... I was there around... oh say 1PM. Spent probably 1/2 hour there, checking everything out and sorting through the LR tub. Have you ever bought any of those $5 mystery frags? Link to comment
Militant Jurist
So I still haven't seen anything that looks like tentacles, but it hasn't lost much in the way of cool. A few intersections of heads seems to be deteriorating, but only in a few parts. I've got it right up near the light and good flow, but no reaction yet. I even tried putting some frozen brine on top of it to see what will happen. All kinds of pods are crawling over it though, but I'm not sure if that is a sign of anything... Link to comment
abe
looks pretty much dead to me. and i think its favia, not acan. good luck on recovering that from the dead Link to comment
adinsxq
sorry... that's toast Link to comment
Militant Jurist
There might be one or two heads left somewhat zombie-ish, because I couple brine that I placed on top of it got pulled down towards the center of the head, but no feeders really were sent out. However, yes, I am pretty sure it's largely just a colorful dead piece, although I'm not terribly upset since my chance for recovery was practically nil, considering the state that I got it in... Thanks for the help anyways. Link to comment
bfedick
I'd keep trying. I brought some porites back from the dead, they're doing well. They survived 10 hours dry, a cycle, several days in the dark, and a freshwater scrub with a stiff brush. While I was brushing them was when I discovered this colony. They looked dead for a couple weeks, I spot fed them with reef roids and now they are doing well, supposed to be a hard species to keep alive. These animals are amazingly tough. If there is any sign of life, and you have the time and desire, keep trying, you might be surprised. Good luck with the zombie's! Link to comment
Roc!
If your trying to let it recover I would move it away from the light some, and have it in a med to low flow. Link to comment
Militant Jurist
My lighting is relatively weak, atm. I have 15w of actinic, and 15w of 18000K T-8 lighting over a ten gallon tank. Should I still attempt to shade it some more? Link to comment

Should I still attempt to shade it some more? I would just put it as low in the tank as possible, you don't have much lighting so I don't think it will be an issue Link to comment
