Which Substate for refugium

I am setting up a sump/fuge for my aquapod 24. It is plumbed using an overflow. So far all I have in it is some cheato. I am looking at Walt smith Fuji mud, mineral mud, and miracle mud. My goal is to reduce nitrates. With that in mind which is the better choice and how deep of a bed should I make
