Purigen vs. Carbon?

Thanks! I'm running both of them, but they both claim to eliminate the same things...

They do. Some people run Purigen and Chemipure together as well even though they do the same thing.

The main difference between carbon and every other chemical filtration media is carbon gets spent much faster and once spent can release bad stuff back into the water. Most of the alternatives last longer and won't release toxic crap back into the water after they are spent.

How often should I replace my carbon? And how often should I regenerate my purigen?

I use two little fishies hydro carbon and have never had any problems. I have tried purigan and I think a high grade carbon works better as long as you stay on top of it. Just my opinion

what kind of carbon are you using?

I replace my chemi-pure every 4 months, yet they say it can last up to 6

My purigen I haven't replaced yet since it is not dark in color. Running it for about 2 months now.

I don't trust running anything through bleach so i will just replace, not regenerate. There is no sense in trying to save a few $$ and kill $2200 worth of my life. Yet I have read people doing is sucessfully.

did you notice any problems replacing chemi-pure after four months? i've heard a lot of people say they replace carbon every month and chemi-pure is more or less carbon isnt it? i'm just skeptical of it releasing stuff back into the water if left for more than a month.. i think i've been running mine for about two weeks.. and was wondering when it will be time to toss it.. thanks!

no. The water has never looked better. I don't know what it would release. Chemi-pure is designed for use over a long period of time, and yes you do pay for it. It costs more up front than cheaper carbong that you have to replace more often. It didn't cause me any problems when replacing it.

I use it in my SW tank and FW tank. Replaced on both tanks (3 total bags) last week. Gave me a chance to clean out my filtration area too in my SW tank.

another thing... do you rinse your chemipure and purigen every once in a while or do you just leave it?

no, never on my SW tank. I can't get at my carbon bag very easily since it involves me removing two pumps and trying to fit my had down a hole of death (red sea max). the purigen bag still doesn't have any detritus stuck in it, otherwise i would have rinses.

now on my FW i did lighty rinse the chemi-pure bags, they did clog up with a light coating of detritus.

yes, i have seen people posting here that have regenerated it. They followed the directions on the bottle. I will look around for some posts here.

Thanks! I'm trying to figure out what I need a far as chemical media is concerned. Currently, I have filter floss, carbon (meant for the aquapure filter), and purigen. Anything else?

no. I run chemi-pure and purigen for chemical filtration. Sponges and sometimes filter floss for mechanical. Only other chemical i can think of would be if you have a phospate problem. Other than that sounds like you are all set.

Great! Thank you! :D

LR is your biological filter, filter floss is your mechanical filter and purigen is your chemical filter. You are all set and many would argue you don't need the purigen or carbon, but I figure it doesn't hurt.

Thanks! I guess I'll just finish my 3 pack of carbon then only use purigen as my chemical filter. Then I'll have my LR, filter floss, purigen, and sponge.

3 pack of carbon should last your 1 year

Really? I must've missed something. I thought someone said that I should change the carbon once a month...
