blue fishies
Hello, I've bought some arcopora at my lfs, too hard not to buy sps frags with with such good prices!, anyway I've had it for a week so far and well, its doing a lot better then in the tank before with METAL HALIDES!, i feed my arco some coral-vite and keep my pcs a little longer then 12 hours, now my acro is a deep red/purple, before it was brownish red. Also has some green polyps at the base. anyway, so ppl that said i couldn't do it and it would turn brown and slowly die, eat this! so this proves that lighting isnt the only important matter. I'll get some pictures when i get back home Link to comment
JIM27
OK this point has been proven now about 50,000 times Lol. Just having halides wont garantee you anything with SPS. You need good water quality, flow, etc. The best lighting for them is halide, no doubt about that. But they can do wonderfully under less. Link to comment
Raise
I have an unknown species of acro in my 5.5, had it a little over a month and it has grown a .5" new branch already... so its loving the PCs. Link to comment
Crakeur
while I agree (over and over in the various threads) that sps can be kept under pc's, please note that you've had the acro for a very short time. I have found that they will either die overnight (bad water issues) or they will last a couple to three weeks before they die. If you get past the three week mark, then you should be fine. This is just my opnion of course. Also, it is important to note that corals can change color. A local store that I bought an acro frag from once told me that the brown acro I was buying for $15 should color up nicely given a bit of time. It was under halides and they said that it was only in the tank for a week and most of the acros they get turn brownish before coloring up again. I had never heard this but for $15 bucks it was worth a shot. Sure enough, after about a month the coral turned red at the base, purplish at the tip and the polyps were reddish orange. Real strange colors but I think it had more coloration coming but the algae got out of control and the coral lost out in an overgrowth that was unstoppable. update us in another week or two. kennerd
Also realize that may have just arrived @ the LFS from a stressful trip, so it may just be recovering. Longevity is key, but still glad it is looking better. Also, LFS halides may have been a different spectrum and the actinics may be older/different: lots of factors in color change. Just kinda hitchhiking to see how it colors up. Link to comment
Lunchbucket
just because it was under MH's doesnt' mean $hit!! my LFS has 175 MH's on a 180...they are MH's but NOT enough for a 180....alsot their flow and water quality are poor and they wonder why they can't keep them much. what size tank and what PC's?? watch your alk/ca that is A BIG THING FOR SPS Lunchbucket Link to comment
