fishfunguy Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 So I've noticed recently in my 2.5 gal there are several tiny arms, which look like they belong to serpent stars, sticking out of the lr. The problem is that it appears that the central disk may be stuck inside the lr. During feeding time the little arms come out but not a single whole star comes out completely. Anyone else have this happen? Will they eventually outgrow their crevice and be crushed inside their tomb??
TheCarTech Posted December 6, 2007 Posted December 6, 2007 Most of my stars do that. I have never seen their central disks. It's kind of neat to see all the arms come out when I put mysis shrimp in there.
H20 Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 I thought the same thing about my mini brittle star. I never saw him, except for his arms always sticking out of little holes. He was always in the same spot. I thought he had grown inside the hole and couldn't get out. About a month later I saw that he had taken up residence in another rock, and some other holes. Guess they can get out if they want to....... I love to give him a piece of mysis and watch him rip it out of my tweezers....
supahtim Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 are you sure they are serpent stars? could be some type of worm.. either way, you would be surprised at how flexible starfish are. Tim
Greenstar Posted December 17, 2007 Posted December 17, 2007 Think about why a starfish would do this. It can feed with just it's arms exposed and if a predator swims by and grabs it's arm the starfish lives to see another day. However if a predator is able to grab the central disk, the starfish now dies. Make sense?
