dan15daman Posted November 11, 2007 Posted November 11, 2007 I just figured I'd tell you all a funny story of something that happenned last summer. I got a 55g tank from my uncle about 8 months ago that houses African Cichlids at the moment. It was equipped with superior lighting, and awesome filtration. The filtration consisted of a Penguin BioWheel, and a wet-dry system for a 75g tank. I had no idea how a trickle filter worked when I got it so I looked up how to set it up and that was that. I set it up with no problem. Most wet dry filters have the return from the top just hanging on the back of the tank and barely in the water (for good reason as you will soon see). My uncle, however, made his into an undergravel cleaning system so it stretched all the way to the bottom of the tank and went under the gravel. IT ran fine for months until the power went out for a couple of hours during a tropical storm. I was on the phone when I walked in and holy crap did I curse! I didn't notice until my feet soaked into the wet carpet that something had happenned. I looked in the African tank and there was barely 2 inches of water in it. Al lthe fish were splashing all over the tank frantically searching for water. Then I noticed that there was a pool of water all the way across my room. It had also slid about 2 feet into the room next to mine too! What happenned was that the pump in the sump had shut off with the power so all the water in the tank back siphoned. That was 55g of fun all over my carpet. I had to move 2 fish tanks and mixed my Africans in with my 30g tank for a week becasue I had a trip plannd. Moral of the story... Make sure the siphon breaks before the sump overflows.
Nick's Reef Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 happens to my dad all the time but never that bad. As soon as the power goes out he makes shure the siphon breaks.
Gvtv44 Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 This reminds me of when I left my pump on to fill my tank (which matches the story of the many people who leave their RO/RO/DI units running ) and I stepped in the room, and had the unsettling feeling of water squishing between my toes
