Live sand/filling question

Will hurt the sand because the salt will get into the pores between sand grains and won't mix into the water. Also, any future corals that go in the sand will be burned by the salt left there.

Best way is to mix the salt and water (in the tank if you wish), wait a day, and add the sand.

also adding plain water to live sand would prolly kill a lot of the beneficial bacteria. fyi pouring sand into the salt water is going to cause a larger dust storm than if the sand was in the tank already and the water was poured on top of the sand.

just a slight correction, even if salt got into the pores of the sand the salt would still eventually dissolve if givin enough contact time with water. in another words, the mixing time before all salt dissolved would be increased if salt were to enter salt pores.

Well the dust storm won't bother me, it'll be about 2 months before livestock and a week or 2 before the LR, I'll be patient. :)

true - very true. Passive diffusion would occur, given time and opportunity (permeability can be an issue).

Also, what the RODI water didn't kill in the sand, the salt would kill (they use salt to cure - kill all the bacteria - in country ham...my favorite food).

X-Ravin - patience is a great thing, and one which will benefit you greatly, especially in reefkeeping. Glad you don't have to learn that lesson the hard (and expensive) way like so many of the rest of us. :)
