When should I first notice the parameters spike right away a few days?

first thing you should usually notice is ammonia, followed by nitrites, and then by nitrates. timing will vary but you should be thru ammonia and nitrites within a month, tops. nitrates could linger (going down slowly) for another month or slightly more.

 

i would say a safe zone to add anything hardy would be <40ppm nitrates. more sensitive animals (e.g. shrimp) should wait until at least <20ppm imo. hth
