But what it comes down to is the memories that are created, the gifts will be forgotten but the love and memories will be passed down to the next generation.

That's what my wife & I tell ourselves. The first Christmas that we were able to buy gifts for anyone (such as my godkids) was last year but not so this year or for the next several, most likely. We can't afford to get anything for anyone, especially ourselves.

I have a 5.5g because I haven't been able to afford anything more up to now, so all you people who say that this isn't a hobby for people without $$: screw you. :)

Have a great Christmas Bug, your kids will love their books.

Xmas if for rich people with nice houses... that leaves me out. Don't get wrapped up in all the hype from tv and everyone else living off their credit cards.

Nah, Christmas is for everyone. Personally, I think poor people have the best Christmas. And by poor, I mean not rich ;) You know, the working class :)

myself i don't like christmas. i would rather celebrate a birthday christmas doesn't mean anything anymore. at least for me. my family has never given a crap about what the kids think they always get crappy gifts. and don't do anything to make the occasion special at all. theres always an argument about something stupid and my uncle is always sloppy drunk. so personally i'd rather save my money and throw the kids(there really the only ones that matter as far as i'm concerned) a nice party on there individual birthdays and give them good presents then rather than be stressed out about a commercialized holiday like christmas. lol if you can't tell im not exactly religious hehe!!

I love Christmas, especially the smells. But I hear you on the bickering. Reminds me of my Dad's side of the family. I think they get together just to argue

VDub, congrats on a great Christmas present.

I suspect that if things are that tight, your wife had to reach to justify it, if she is anything like my wife. The only way she could likely get there mentally is because she believes you're a good man. That's a heck of a woman there.

A number of people here have mentioned lean years. The best Chrstmas present I ever got from my wife was one year we had a total Christmas budget of 50.00. I asked her not to buy me anything as I wanted to spend the 50.00 on her.

She presented me with a small box. It had hand-made little coupons in it. It was for stupid things like favorite meals, getting out of having to go to some inane social event. Watching a preferred TV program when one of her reality shows was on.

Setting aside the present itself for a second, what it showed me was how well she was in tune with all my idiosincracies. I was touched. Still brings tears to my eyes when I think about it all these years later.

The box sits on my bookcase in my office to this day. I never did redeem a single coupon. The gift was too pure of heart.

Hear, hear, my brother. The best thing about Christmas for me is the love of my wife, especially the fact that she still stands by me after all these years! I love the way you put it.

Merry Christmas morning, 71vwbug - you're a very rich man! Merry Christmas to everybody on N-R!

Reading these posts about who can afford to buy gifts and who can't, reminds me of the sermon we had in church yesterday. The pastors' topic was abour The Perfect Christmas. He touched on the subject of gift buying and the stresses that can go along with it. The really perfect christmas was some 2000 years ago when we received the best gift of all, a savior, born in a manger. Today, I'm sorry to say, commercialism has over shadowed the real true meaning of christmas.

As I sit here typing this, I feel truely blessed. My wife is fixing a big breakfast and my house is filled with family, my daughter ( who is expecting with my first grandchild, my son-in-law, and my son who is home from college). This what christmas is all about.

God Bless and Merry Christmas!

For me it was always New Years because Christmas was not a big deal in Russia, now I enjoy it much more as long as I keep away from as much of the ad's as possible. Stores put the Christmas things out WAY too early and it spoils the feelings. My husband generally ignores Christmas until after Thanksgiving and though we can afford almost anything we want we keep the gifts to a minimum.

Today it will be dinner aboard our boat with a couple of friends our daughter and that is all, we like to keep it simple.

Well I am not sure why I am posting this, but I hope you guys can find just a tad bit inspiration for the New Years...

It's a quote from a movie that just came out, and I must say, its one of the greatest...

Hoepfully you will read it, and beat the odds by coming over the top :)

Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place and it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't how hard you hit; it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done. Now, if you know what you're worth, then go out and get what you're worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hit, and not pointing fingers saying you ain't where you are because of him, or her, or anybody. Cowards do that and that ain't you. You're better than that!

Well it wasn't a new tank but you have the right attitude, Merry Christmas all and Bug take care of yourself, I am sure you will be back in the reef soon! If I had an extra tank I would send it to ya but I am so poor I can barely afford to pay attention ;)
