TroyT
$100 per gallon is what I tell people wanting to get into the hobby. There is another thread that covers this topic but I couldn't find it for this reply. Link to comment
sdbeazley
I know I have seen all of the posts but some people go big in pricing where as some people like me go small. I wanted to see how pricing would affect tanks looks... Link to comment
Reefer_Buddha
why would you need 4 bayco lights? Link to comment
sdbeazley
cuz it gives me 52 watts Link to comment
Reefer_Buddha
dude thats ghetto. At least get a CSL hood or something similar. You arent even getting actinic with that. You can get by with a 1x65 50/50 for less than 100$ Link to comment
sdbeazley
I don`t like actinic, Pure white light like 6.5k or 10k is what I like. For now this is fine and is soon going to be modded to fit 6 of them up there. Link to comment
Reefer_Buddha
hahaah good luck! I have just one over a fuge and its getting really hot. 6 of those with the tar/magnetic ballast is gona be incredibly hot. Hope you have a gfi on the plug Link to comment
sdbeazley
they are not that hot, it is about 88 degrees outside and my tank reads 78 with out A/C on. All I do is have a fan and keep them from going over 84 when the windows open. They are on a Gfci. Link to comment
Reefer_Buddha
you "could" do it if you relocate the ballasts away from the hood. Quite a diy job tho. Not tryin to discourage you, i just know how hot those get. You plan on making a custom hood? Wood? Metal? Link to comment
Smokin-Reefer
not to steal the thread but when I got my first nano, a 5.5. I had 3 of the bayco's jammed in a wood hood. I remotely mounted all of the ballast' in a metal project box, along with independent switches. I had 2 of the stock bulbs, and later purchased an 03 to go with it. It did, and still works great. Sure, I could have just gotten a 32w retro or something like that, but I didn't want to have to shell out the "big bucks", when I wasn't even sure if I was going to stick with the hobby or not, I still use the lights for the fuge! good luck SdBeazly. sdbeazley
well I was thinking about wood but the cluttered look also suits me as well. I know the mod you are talking about and I know about shoving the ballasts in project boxes. I was just planning on fitting the 6 bulb tube things with paper reflector on top of the standard glass and plastic hood lavivg the ballasts and handle on top. Link to comment

SeaSide
If you go for MH way, then add $200 more to your current lighting budget. If you getting yours from mail order companies. watch out the S&H cost. Float switch, refugium, refugium lights, cooling fan, adapter, a few more PH for circulation, vinyl tubes, some electric wires, etc etc.... cost of these ithy bithy things will add up quite nicely up to.... Mine? Its near $80 per gallon now. even without corals. so, I quit here and wait till i got some money at my hand for corals. Then I guess it will def over $100 per gallon. Link to comment
