Anemone ID please and mystery growth...

Would someone be able to help me ID a couple things? The first is an anemone. I have four of these little critters that came out of my rock the last couple days. I think that they are RBTAs but can't tell for sure. They are all about the size of a dime (maybe a little smaller)

Here is the mystery stuff. The picture isn't that great (actually it's pretty crappy) because it is toward the back of the tank and they are incredibly small (about 1/8th to 1/4 inch). Sorry. These occur in bunches on my Pukani rock (only). If I squint really hard I think I can make out four petalsarms off a central translucent stalk. Any ideas?

Thanks.

I'll start by saying that I'm new to this hobby, but the first looks like a bubble tip to me, too. That's SO cool that you got some of these as hitchhikers! I hope they do well and grow for you in your tank, so keep us updated on them!

I have the things that are in the second picture, too. Mine grow on the rock, and they also grow on the glass. They seem to have stinging cells on them, and they can catch things like frozen brine shrimp as they float by, if they make contact with the "polyps" or whatever they are. That does seem to be a pretty good picture, though, considering that these things are REALLY small. Let me know if you find out what they are.

Aiptasia?!? Doh! Does anyone have a picture of Aiptasia when they are very tiny? I made a mistake when I said that they were an 1/8th to 1/4 inch. They are actually only about a 1/16th to an 1/8th.

If it does turn out to be Aiptasia, what are my options? Since I am still cycling, I doubt I can get the Aiptasia eating nudibranch and to make it worse, thsi is only growing on my base rock so removing the rock would cause serious havoc in my tank... Ugh, I hope it's not that.

Waaaaah!

The first pic isn't a baby bubble tip. It's Majano! And to think I was going to buy some food for it today. Now, instead, I have to put on the battle gear and duke it out with them... What a crappy hitchhiker...

Hope this helps. I posted this on ReefCentral.com to see about an ID and Dr. Ron came back with this.

It is really hard to tell what they are. Perhaps hydroids, perhaps even soft corals. However, they don't appear to be Aiptasia.

I was just looking at my rock and what I thought was more hair algae starting, but its the same thing you have I think. It is very small in a group and they bend in to each other once in a while. The have 4 transparent almost "arms" on the top. with little balls at the end. Is this the same? I tried to draw a example..:D it looks terrible, I am not an artist!

HumblePie - does your translucent branches look anything like the ones I have photographed? I've also been wondering what these things were, btw...

These mystery stalks in my tank twitch by itself every once in a while, but it goes into seizure-type twitching whenever I add in the MarineSnow Plankton Diet when I feed my hitchhiking featherduster... hmmm...

Those are hydroids. They are harmless and jsut a part of the natural rock. The "arm" part will break off eventually and float around the tank, attaching to the glass causing you to start another thread asking what the jelly fish looking thing on your glass is. :)

They are harmless. Good luck with the pesky anemone.

Not that they are bad, but that they have a powerful sting and can multiply faster than rabbits on viagra. They may not be a problem now, but when they decide to go through a population explosion, either by splitting or somesort of polyp ejection, don't say we didn't warn you. :*(
