lately i've been neglecting this online course i'm taking in favor of reading reef websites and a couple books on corals and marine fish... turns out i have a mid-term this friday.

I get home from work, and realize that I have about 50 more slides to read for the rest of the chapter (plus I still have to review the last 4 chapters) before doing the mid-term.

So I take a deep breath, and power up the laptop - and then my BB starts ringing. "Hello?", "It's Parkview Towers Security - your package has arrived."

I live in Toronto, ON (Canada). Here is my order from BulkReefSupply.com

(20 lbs dry eco rock, space saver ro system):

The rock and the ro system were packaged very well:

This is what I got for "20 lbs":

And here is the reason I still have 50 slides to read:

i decided to change the front part of the scape a bit, the gf suggested to move the scape towards the back corner. i plan to keep the entire glass clean, so i left just enough space for my mag-float to get by without hitting the rock - i think i like this layout better....

(i'm also going to move the powerheads up a little higher.)

SHE'S A SCORPIO!!!

Ended up taking out the rock and trying a number of different scapes, really liked a few of them - but then failed to duplicate the design each time I moved the rocks into the tank. So I decided to create a final scape with the rocks already in the tank (and the sand as well). I wanted it to look as 'natural' as possible - but at the same time provide an ideal surface to place corals on. I used approximately 15 of the 20 lbs (of eco dry rock) I got from BRS. I used 15lbs of the CaribSea Ocean Direct Caribbean Live Sand. I used distilled water for the initial fill. I have the heater in chamber 1, and the [empty] media & fuge baskets in chamber 2. The sensor for my digital thermometer is in chamber 3 - where I have the MJ 1100 connected to the outflow (via the stock elbow that came with biocube). I forgot to attach the suction cups to the bottom of the pump but it doesn't seem to be a problem. And it's actually a lot quieter than I expected. This is what I ended up with... (Apologies for the semi-decent photos.)

Noticed that the emerald crab no longer reaches for the clownfish whenever it swims close to him. The shrimp goby comes out of hiding when the lights go out. The clownfish and the blenny eat frozen brine shrimp and mysis shrimp. The goby also eats some brine shrimp. Noticed small air bubbles in the sand, on rocks, and sometimes on the back wall. Cerith snail laid eggs a few days ago, but it seems like something may have some of them.

Diatom bloom has decreased significantly. The emerald crab occasionally picks around the base of the purple ricordea eating any surrounding algae. I've seen it pick at a polyp or two, but he doesn't try to eat/kill it. The acroporas seem to be surviving ok, haven't noticed any additional bleaching. Noticed (what I think is) aiptasia growing on the piece of LR that the smaller acropora came on. The baby crab hitchhiker is still alive and has made his home in the larger acropora. (Looks like an anemone crab that found his way onto the acropora shortly before I picked it up from the LFS.

Also saw a very small worm (which I think is a bristle worm) close to the bottom of the rock that the larger acropora is on. (It seemed like it was half pink and half black.) Convict blenny was a hitchhiker too, who got caught in the net in the process of getting the shrimp goby - surprised the guy at the LFS didn't see him as he bagged the fish. Calcium seems to be lower than recommended, consistently measuring 320ppm. I've been doing more frequent water changes of about 5 L every 3 days.

Here are some photos taken with my blackberry...
