A. millepora are very popular with the AEFW crowd, unfortunately. Maybe those tantalizing, stringy polyps are just too good to pass up...

They seem to have left the polyps alone to some degree, but decimated the tissue.

I should more accurately say Halichoeres leucoxanthus which is the actual species. But minimum recommended size is 50 gallons. If your looking for something smaller a six line wrasse is just as tenacious.

I think I will baste outside of the tank in the dip, this way no wrasse needed. I think they are a good choice if you are blowing off corals in the tank however.

Yeah, adding a six-line wrasse is better than nothing consuming it.

The AEFW's stay on the tissue of the coral, I have not seen a wrasse eat them off the coral personally, but not saying they don't. Remove...dip...baste...rinse...replace, repeat twice a week, [sigh].

sorry to hear about the worms... the tank looks awesome though.

Thank you, I hope to have these buggers beat in a couple of months.

How goes the battle??

Dipity-do-da all the day long. So far so good, thanks for asking Spirifucci -_-

You can do it!. Once you have won this battle how do you plan to protect yourself in the future??

That's a great question really. The only way to protect yourself from AEFW is to set up a QT and keep the coral in there for 2-3 months before adding it to your main display. This means you need a QT set up for SPS, separate skimmer, lighting, flow, filtration. It's like having two SPS tanks really. Doing this is not realistic for most people due to the cost and extra time required to maintain two SPS tanks.

So what am I going to do? Well for now any new additions of SPS will be dipped and placed in the display, then dipped and dipped again twice a week for two months before mounting the coral. Not the best solution, but for now the best I will be able to do. In the future I may set up a second SPS tank and call it my QT.

Also a more thorough inspection will be done, that is with a magnifying glass, to look for any signs of AEFW, or any other pest that may have hitched a ride.

Live and learn.

I've seen wrasses nip off flat worms on corals. It would definitely be easy for wrasses to eat it off acros since acros like any other sps, are hard stony corals.

It was recommended to me that I dip corals twice a week, I feel this is too stressful on the corals and will only dip once every 7-10 days. Amazingly, my Millepora (pictured earlier) is looking better, not nearly recovered but better. No more losses since the last update, [crossing fingers].

IIX - Were these AEFW's they were eating off the SPS?

Do to the intricate structure of SPS, the many inaccessible areas can not be accessed by wrasses IMO.

This tank has been nominated for TOTM.

If you love it . . . make your voice heard. :)

This is such a kind sentiment, really, thank you. I have expressed before in this thread I am not personally big on accolades or honours of this kind. This is a hobby I very much enjoy, it drives me insane and keeps me sane at the same time, I do it for me and have never looked to "win" anything from it. My tank is a mess right now, and I really don't think it is deserving of any award, maybe an award for perseverance, but in this hobby most of us deserve that award. No awards for me Shelley, thank you though for such a kind post you have made.

Hang in there with the AEFW. I've had just about every pest and disaster but you eventually get past them all. I may have a few AEFW at the moment myself. I've noticed the bite marks on a garf bonsai frag recently (debating just tossing the frag). The stress and more importantly the reward that comes with this hobby is often not understood by many except for those of us hobbyists. You will have the tank looking great as usual before no time.

Haha, a couple of days ago I was giving it away...I decided to keep it. Now my MP10 is failing, it's just 14 months old, gerrr. Thanks nano tank .

Thanks for the words of encouragement steely185, I'm going to hang in there for now with this tank, most corals are likely to survive. A little shopping and I'll have it up to par soon.

Can you remove and dip the corals that look to be affected? In many cases they say remove ALL acropora corals for dipping, even if they don't show signs of AEFW. If you have one, you may have more. I honestly believe these AEFW's will become epidemic in North America in the next couple of years, it's already everywhere, and so difficult to treat.

When I actually looked through the thread to see if this system had been nominated for TOTM, I couldn't believe it when I discovered that it hadn't been. It seemed like a huge oversight. Now it has been. :P A lot of people really love your system.

If your tank eventually wins, and you're really nonplussed, I'll give you my personal cell number so you can call me and yell at me in person.

Christine you are to kind of your reef keeping hobby. Did you ever get intouch with Dave Neuwave about the sea fan? Hope to see more of your tank soon.

Okay Kat, just make sure you get your water tested for K, you don't want to OD.

Check out this A. tenuis frag I picked up on the weekend...

Nice frag indeed ....

There are so many incredible and deserving tanks here on Nano-Reef that have not won TOTM. I nominate them all for the "Monthly Dedication & Perseverance Award." :P

sweet tank! I miss my 20H :P

Thanks got2envy, your tanks are amazing, I remember commenting quite a while back on how your frag tank looked better than most peoples display tank. Your a true and dedicated hobbyist.

I did and the fan is shaping up quite nicely now, polyps are 90% open again. Seems to be doing well, It could have been adjusting to the tank, a long adjustment, nonetheless, Dave was very helpful, he knows his stuff! And so do you! :)

I am still a Noobie! lol but thanks for the comment! Glad that we can help our fellow nano reef members! Any sneak peak at your tank?

I switched mine over to a 55 low... let me see if I can find a pic. :P If your a noobie, I'm impressed.

Here's one I had on my phone... rough shot but it gives you the idea! One day I'll have to actually take some photos with my Digital SLR. :)

Still looking great! That Acan is gorgeous, who am I kidding, everything is gorgeous!

My acan's never seem to inflate like that anymore, except after being fed some mysis.

Thanks pyronus, the acan I posted was near death 3 months ago. When I bought it it was fine then I placed into my pico tank and it did not do well at all. I took it out and placed it in my 20 gallon. I fed it every other day with mysis and before long it was producing heads. I am not very experienced with acans but from what I have experienced, they need to be fed often to thrive.

I have wondered about LPS expansion for some time, I understand that by inflating it's tissue, it also increases the surface area in which it can photosynthesize and gain energy. If your acan is not opening fully (assuming parameters are in check) then it may be getting too much light. The acan may simply be protecting itself from copious amounts of light. It could also be flow, too much flow will cause it to contract as well. Maybe try moving the acan to different areas of the tank, varying the light and flow it receives, I'm sure you will find the sweet spot and it will open up fully for you. Mine remains open during the light period of the day and often the night.
