I want these lights for my new tank, I am a newbie so I dont wanna spend much just to start. The tank is 24"L 20"W 15"H. I am guessing I ll need 12 bulbs for this, 6 CW and 6 Blue. I only intend to keep softies, zoas etc. Would these lights be sufficient?

And cant I put them a bit lower than 10"? It looks a bit odd, The height.

Bump!

How is the shimmer with these?

If its not much, can I supplement with RB CREE on 60 degree optics?

EDIT: I ordered 6 Whites and 6 blues :D

the shimmer is great. Just remember you need surface movement to get shimmer. so make sure you have a powerhead moving the water around in the tank.

you can kinda see the shimmer a little in this video i took of my frag rack the other day with my cell. there is a good deal of shimmer with these lights. they are intense!

hk led will sell the 4x1w 60 degree covers for $2ea shipped (just message hk led). i ordered a dozen to replace my 30 degree covers and two more bulbs for $24. the old 30 degree lenses were just to spotlighty and i took them off shortly after trying them. i'm hoping the new lenses with blend much better.

Any idea how much more, or less effective running these lights without optics on a shallow tank would be? I'm using a 9 bulb setup (3 1w lights per bulb, 6 blue, 3 cool white) over a 10 gallon frag tank (approx 10" deep). The 45 degree optics seem to be a bit too focused in that shallow of a tank, but I want to make sure I will have enough PAR if I run them without optics. Any thoughts?

I have the 60 degree covers on my 4x1w bulbs. I get no spotlighting at all with them being ~8" over the water... you will probably be satisfied

HI TinyG,

I was following your thread even though I worked with 3W Cree LEDs with arduino controller. I am setting up a 10G frag tank. I have mixed reed and trying to frag some of the corals that outgrow my tank. Do you think 5blue and 5cool white GU10's is enough for a 10G tank. I think I can have 3 tiers if frag racks for different light intensities.

Thanks

Since I switched out my tank from 10 gallon to a 18 gallon I added 8 more GU10 sockets to my fixture. This is what it looks like now. Currently I'm only running 15 GU10's because I that’s all I have right now. I placed an order for 3 more; now I’m just waiting for the shipment from Hong Kong.
