GU10 LED Build Thread (Chinese Ebay Lights)

So 30 on a 29gal? That sounds good and i dont think you will need to add to that. Unless you want to change to custom bulbs with the blue and white mixed in the same bulb.

I am looking at doing this over my 29 gal. I prefer a blue loof to the tank. With that in mind, how many bulbs should I get for this size tank? I would eventually like to keep SPS. I see you started with 22 for a 55 Gal, but deiced to add a few more later. Would 2 rows with 10 blue lights and 5 whit lights be enough to support coral growth?

How big is the old fixture or are you building a new one to install the GU10 leds? I would get 2.2 custom bulbs with the color in a X shape.

SO I am actually getting a 60 gal tank instead. The dimensions are 20"x24"x30" tall I already have a LED light that I have over my smaller tank they are the 3w Cree LEDs and I have 24 of them. So If I use that fixture how many more would I need? And if I do the 4X1w and have them customized should I do 2 blue and 2 white? Or 3 blue and 1 white? I like blue but don't want an over abundance of blue:)

The area that the LEDs are in is about 15"X6"

I would center the fixture and do a row across the front and back.

I actually meant 15 total lights... is that not enough for a 29?

If you only do 15 which should be ok. But i would double that when you can. Any ways i would do a single row center across the tank. Like Tiny originally did on this 55gal. I would go ahead and get 30 and do two rows.

I gotta say i really hate the 30 degree optics lol. What sort of epoxy would i use to make these optic free? Really wanted some LED blue supplements over my 40 breeder but these spotlights are driving me nuts.

After a few email back and forth with LED-HK, I have an order for a few 60 degrees optics coming to replace the stock 30 degree lens. They are $1 each. or you also can order these 4x1w bulbs with the 60 degrees lens. just have to let them know that is what you want.

wow thx for the info philip. i wanted to get those optics from hk when it became available.

Is it just my brain playing tricks, or has the prices of the different bulbs been going up and up?

Supply and demand I'd guess. They're starting to realize there's a growing market.....

MGDMIRAGE got any ftp with the new leds?

I don't yet, i wanted them to put next to my T5s but with the 30 degree optics the beams are ridiculous. It looked nice without optics but like TinyGiant said the optics hold the LED's against the heatsink so i'd have to find a way to make them keep contact with the heatsink.

hey everyone. Here is my build. I have 5 CW and 6 RB's. I just took my old PL fixture and retrofitted the LED's into it. I'm loving it. Only thing is... I feel like without the Lenses it's not enough light for SPS. Maybe someone can give me a little help as to how much PAR these things give out without lenses. Here is the retrofitted PL fixture. Thought it was pretty clever.

I just sent HK an email about getting some 60 degree optics. Tiny what are your thoughts on this ? and is it possible to run them without optics ?

were your par readings taken with the lenses off or on with the 5.5G? When i have all the lenses on it creates a spot light effect in my tank and i have no other way of hanging these lights.

the 60 degrees optics for the 4x1w led from LED-HK were $1 each shipped. they were supposedly shipped out early last week. so we'll see if they show up in sometime next week.

will report back when I get them.

I think that with the bulbs that close to the surface you would be fine without optics to grow SPS. Although I'd definitely want to get a shield of some sort for them. Did you screw the led board down to the heatsink once you took off the optics?

I dealt with spotlight effect by placing them closely together and hanging them about 12-15 inch from surface.

Dear all,

I have a tank which is 100cm x 70cm x 50cm (50cm is the height of the tank, about 47cm of water).

How many bulbs would you recommend, and where can I buy them?

thanks in advance!

Yes, I did screw the led's into the mount. That was one thing i notice about them when i took the lenses off. that's the thing, I cant hang them 12 to 15" off the water. This is the only way to do it. how far down do you thing i could place SPS and be safe?

I just read the entire thread... Very interesting.

I think I'm going this route with my now 40B build. I do have one question. Is anyone running these LED's without optics and do you have pics. I would like to keep the LED's as close to the water as possible, I want to keep the hood as unobtrusive as possible. I will use a splash shield between the LED's and water surface and have a fan pulling air through the hood for cooling.

Thanks

Lucas
