Deleted User 6
Is it really worth the $25 entrance fee? Or could I just put out a WTB on MR and get whatever I want from hobbyists at the prices they are sold for at the swap? Link to comment

metrokat
Jeese, that was a ridiculous amount of shopping and I'm not even home yet. I was doing fine on my self imposed budget till Jason Fox came into my life. DANGNABBIT KG, I can't shop with you anymore. So I took just so much cash but then Jason Fox came into my life. So bloody android allowed me to paypal him on the spot. DANGNABBIT KG. So much heavy lifting, I'm going to have to bring a roller board next time. Sheesh. Edit. I got stuff I can't even pronounce. Holy corals batman. Link to comment

Lawnman
I was just reading your thread. Nice looking tank and kitchen counter tops lol. Why did you link all the black pipe together? You can get the exact link of black pipe you need. They cut it and thread it dor you at Home Depot or Lowes. Would of saved you a TON of money on couplings and generally small sections are more than 1 big piece. You like the Deep Blue tank? I have the rimless 75. Link to comment

If you want to be around for the end of the day fire sales, then yes, it's $25 well spent. I nabbed two fist sized SPS colonies at the end of the night for $20 each. And really... about two hours into the event, I'm pretty sure who ever was supposed to be working the door got bored and took off... So... Pics! That's why you guys weren't on today! Pics when everything settles in. Lots of angry, retracted corals and slime right now. Jeese, that was a ridiculous amount of shopping and I'm not even home yet. Holy corals batman. Yes, Kat and I need babysitters. And to leave our wallets in our cars until the swap is 30 minutes from ending. I learned this lesson when I paid $30 for a giant black sun coral frag (like a dozen heads) then an hour later Kat got the other half of it for $10. I was just reading your thread. I have the rimless 75. I didn't know what size of everything I needed until I took it all home and messed around with a billion different pieces. I liked the look of the links... Pics didn't do the thing justice... It matched the decor of the house really well. Deep Blue is crap. The rim creeped off and I replaced the tank with an AGA. I didn't notice until I got the replacement tank how green and ugly Deep Blue glass (tempered glass) is compared to AGA tanks. Link to comment

Lawnman
They use low iron for there rimless so can't comment on the green glass. I like the tank except for the huge overflow and silicone job. Link to comment
kgoldy
Sticking with JPEG, no editing... I'm getting a little more comfortable with this camera... Took a few shots under all blue LEDs... And they came out pretty accurate on the LCD screen of the camera... Lets see what they look like here. ^Blue polyp gorg. Got two in case on doesn't do well. Really love the color. ^Yellow polyp gorg turned orange in my tank. I approve. Sofies in the middle are from Kat... Everything else not introduced is some random Jason Fox stuff. What's it all called? Don't know. Don't care. It's all pretty. I let the sexies out of their cage. Can only find 4 of the 6... Two skittish ones hopped around the tank and disappeared. Little crabby. Left- from "Coral Theory" Middle- from Pacific East Aquaculture ($20!!) Right- from Jason Fox Another little crabby in this one^ ^$10 frag from Coralgasm Non-photosynthetic spot... Dendro, Sun, Black Sun. My Yellow Clown Goby was instantly obsessed with this frag. Totally abandoned Kat's branch (where he always hangs out) for this spot- much to the dismay of the little commensal crab. Should have been using a tripod... Sorry... Chaeto was invaded by grape caulerpa... Turned to mush. Removed it all, and now my dispay fuge looks like a display fuge again. Coco worms are a lot happier in the shade from my tank's cross support. ...Probably at, or close to, photo maximum... Going to need someone to comment to break it up so I can post the rest. metrokat
Softies from Kat are green leopard palys. Very pretty under moonlights! Edit: Merry Christmas! Link to comment
kgoldy
Maxi Mini is getting larger... And assaulting nearby paly's. Got rid of the damn Florida Conch. My frags are now safe. Some zoos randomly melting... In my opinion, prettiest frogspawn I have ever seen. Very rich purple, and the green absolutely glows. Only thing I added to the tank that hasn't stopped being really pissed though... So if I set my white balance to the sandbed while all lights are on... Then switch to actinics, the color stays true. Until now, I had always been setting white balance when the lights changed, and everything was getting effed up. These colors really accurately represent what I see with my own eye. That big SPS colony... I freakin LOVE IT under actinics. Smaller frags on this shelf are all from Jason Fox's end of night fire sale. Each well worth the $25 I paid for each piece. Some people were paying $300+ for a lot of his frags... And I know he sold at least one he had marked at $1500. And yeah, that one was gone half way into the show. Link to comment
metrokat
I was too chicken to leave the light on too much longer. Everything was so pissed off. And I felt sure I've killed some stuff with the dipping. Your pics look nice, I want more moonlights! Link to comment
kgoldy
It appears I am taking a dangerous liking to chalice... The new piece is "Original Mummy Eye" from Jason Fox. He quoted some ridiculous "real" value on it... I got for $25. The dude has nice coral and all... But if you ever find yourself at a swap where he's selling... Wait until 30 minutes before close, and ALL of his remaining stuff goes in the $25 section. I know a man's gotta eat and all... But $1500 frags? Come on. Nighttime mangrove roots. Ooooh. Pretty. Annnnd.... Done. Link to comment
metrokat
that rainbow monti from Jason Fox is SICK AND I GOT ONE TOO! how many head son your black sun coral? Link to comment
kgoldy
It looks like 16 heads. Still doesn't look happy... Big dendro doesn't either. Mouths are kind of gaping... Link to comment

metrokat
Mine has 11 or 12, some are tiny. So it will take a while for them to be comfortable but they should be fed regardless right? Mysis? Cyclopeeze? Oysterfeast? Link to comment
pbjelly
Wow! You rocked the end of day deals! Next time I'll do the end instead of the beginning, but I couldn't wait - the fish were yelling at me to get them out of the bag and into my tank. Great corals. I picked up the other half of that frogspawn earlier in the day. The colors are really gorgeous. I can't wait to see everything under the lights when they settle in and stop being so PO'd. Thanks so much for dealing with all of the Live Aquaria stuff - and for setting up Camp kgoldy! I can't wait to see a new FTS when you get everything located. Link to comment
metrokat
The KG camp was pretty awesome I have to agree! Link to comment
kgoldy
I've decided my tank needs more flow. I've had a second MP-40 sitting around unused since I set this system up... Guess I've gotta dig it up... The polyp extension on everything that's getting blasted with flow is awesome- so looks like I've gotta figure out how to get more circulation without creating a massive sandstorm. I'm curious if I could figure out a way to hang a koralia from my tank's center brace to blast the rocks directly... Biggest problem I expect from trying that is sucking in air due to a whirlpool effect. Hmmm... Link to comment

From Reef Builders- New study documents increased growth of staghorn Acropora in higher phosphate levels Posted on December 5th, 2011 by Jake Adams 2 Comments Staghorn Acropora was kept at three phosphate levels and the corals in the highest concentration grew the fastest Acropora corals are a mysterious creature with complex needs and one of those that we thought we’d nailed long ago was their “need” for minimal phosphate concentration in the water. A new study by Dunn et. al. which will be published in January 2012 in the Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology showed that Acropora muricata (A. formosa) grew significantly faster at phosphate concentration of 0.5 mg/l (ppm) than at 0.2 or 0.09 mg/l. The study begins by noting in the abstract that high phosphate levels do all kinds of things to corals including affecting their growth and skeleton density, zoox. concentrations and fecundity – in personal communication with Jeremy Dunn we learned that it was the expectations of the research that growth rate would be diminished in the high phosphate group. After keeping genetically distinct samples of Acropora muriata in the three treatments for four months the corals were analyzed for length, weight, density and even coloration of the growth margins. The Acropora grew in all four treatments: slowest at the lowest level of phosphate and they grew fastest at the high phosphate concentration of 0.5mg/l. The study notes that although phosphate increased overall growth, it led to lower skeletal density – this is perhaps not that much of an issue in aquariums but in the wild it would lead to more brittle branches that would be more susceptible to breaking in strong flow. All the corals appeared healthy as evidenced by the regular extension of the polyps, no recession and no mortalities. It is believed that these Acropora grew faster with increasing phosphate level due to a higher concentration of zooxanthellae, which was also noticeable in the coloration of the corals in the separate treatment groups. Although all the corals started off the experiment with strong presence of white growth margins at the axial tips and the base, in the high phosphate group the growth margins were mostly brown whereas the low phosphate group still had noticeable white margins. This study of Acropora corals in aquarium and published in a peer-reviewed journal is important not only for its results but also for the coral science field doing research using aquariums which hits very close to home for the everyday reef aquarium hobbyist. As with all things in life, the topic of phosphate and coral growth is not black and white and perhaps future studies of this kind may be able to tease out more details about growing corals in captivity. Big thanks to Dr. Sammarco and Jeremy Dunn for providing their time and materials about this significant coral aquarium research. Parts Per Million vs. mg/L...
