Everything is subject to change on this project...

 

I'm attempting to use left over wood from my recent kitchen renovation to match a custom cabinet for my new system. I'm working with a limited amount of finished wood, so it may or may not come out completely awesome. :P

 

 

 

I plan on having a deep sandbed in the fuge area of the sump, with a variety of macros to make it somewhat display worthy.

Started building the frame today. It's 3/4" Birch Plywood reinforced by 2x3's. More to come...

That stand looks freakin awesome. I can't cut wood for my life, unfortunately. Maybe it's because i use a circular saw freehand? Damn it i can't make straight cuts lol.

 

I like your plans for this tank. Looks solid, like your stand. Following.

How much clearance is there between the top of the sump and the stand? Looks really close froom the sketch.

 

And you gotta get a PAR meter under those Boost fixtures once you get them.

I went to school for cabinet making, unfortunately don't have the few hundred thousand dollars to buy all the equipment need to make some really fantastic furniture. =[

The hand sketch was just to get my idea out of my head and into something tangible. It's to scale, but the height wasn't determined when I was doing it...

 

I'm still a google sketchup noob, so that's not a perfect rendition either. The bottom and top moldings (which are 4 inches in both sketches) will not be there- The sides will be flush to match my kitchen cabinets.

 

The inside space will be 26 inches, which is two inches more than I need to remove my skimmer cup.

 

Here's some pictures to show you the space I'm working with, and the cabinets I'm matching. The tank in the picture is the one I'm using, unless I can find a 90 gallon that someone will trade me for... The existing tank stand and 30B tank is being sold to anyone in the NY area who's looking to pick it up!

Well, the cabinet seems to be 100% done. Hopefully the holes I drilled for the overflow and return are in the right spot, and are big enough to work on the plumbing.

 

I didn't have enough wood to make a door to close in the fresh water tank (the 20 high on the left side) so I trimmed it out to make it look pretty. I'll probably add a glass top and spray paint that with black krylon to give it a more finished look.

 

Since I put in about 8 hours, and spent about $100 on lumber... I'd say this cost me about $300 to build (with free stuff excluded).

Got the cabinet home... Really hope I can exchange this thing for a 90 gallon RR now... fingerscrossed

 

Lighting sucks at night for using the camera phone, I'll try to get better pictures later. I had to do some stain mixing because I didn't have enough pre-finished wood to cover everything I wanted to... but I gotta admit I did a pretty awesome job at matching the color.

 

Before I left the shop, I removed some of the unnecessary load bearing 2x3's to add some room for my skimmer and other equipment. I also cut a hole so to line up with my electric, so I can put the cabinet against the wall, instead of leaving room for extension cords and stuff.

 

Next week I'll start on my fuge/sump, and look around at buying the rest of the equipment and plumbing. Hoping to get this thing wet before February, but we'll see how much time I have to work on it.

Here's the only part I stained... Mixed Minwax's Cherry with Mahogany, and pretty much nailed the color.

Copy/pasting from my thread in the DIY forum... Hope to get some responses!

 

Scrapping the last, tried and true, simple design... Going to make it a prettier display fuge up front. (check 75RR thread in my signature for cabinet)

 

Color coded things for reference-

Yellow - Phosban reactor

White - Filter sock

Red - Skimmer

Green - Return pump

Gray - maxijet 1200 (feeding phosban reactor)

 

I haven't figured out how to draw plumbing in google sketchup, so please use your imagination a bit. :P

 

Flow goes into filter sock (obviously), and into skimmer chamber. Maxijet pumps some of the water up through a flexi-tube into the phosban reactor. From the phosban reactor, it goes into the front, long, fuge chamber. So at the moment, it looks like I'll have about 20 gph running through the fuge, where I'll have a macro algae pack from reefcleaners.

 

Water from the fuge drops into the return chamber. Everything that doesn't get sucked up by the little maxijet in the skimmer chamber, goes through the bubble trap and then into the return.

 

I'll have an ATO set up with 20 gallons of fresh water.

In my experience you need as much room for a refugium as possible and less than half of a 40 breeder for a 100+ gallon system is not going to cut it. That said, if you really want the 'display fuge' I would skip the sand completely and just load the thing with chaeto/graciallara/etc. The sand doesn't add anything since it isn't deep enough to be a true DSB.

 

It also doesn't make any sense to me to have the GFO reactor feeding the fuge. You don't want the fuge to get chemically filtered water otherwise there isn't anything in the water to feed the algae. Maybe Tee off the drain line straight into the fuge? This bypasses the filter sock, for better or worse, but also would allow you to control the flow into the fuge.

Thanks for the comment. I was planning on adding an inch of figi mud, with 5-6 inches of sugar grain sized sand... With mangroves and such in there. That's not enough sand? The fuge would have a little over 25 gallons of total volume (according to LxWxH converted into gallons, 40B hold more than 40 gallons), ~6 inches of substrate, with 8-9 inches of water above that. That's not enough room?

 

And I think you're right about splitting the drain... That's probably a much better idea.

I guess i assumed the dividing baffle wouldn't be the entire height of the tank, it is enough sand depth then but it may not be worth the volume it takes up. I'd still rather do a pure refugium with no sand to get the most nutrient export as possible.

 

Similarly, if you want mangroves for export you'll need to fill the whole fuge with them, two dozen or more ideally. A sandbed would make sense then although they'll root in porous live rock just as well.

...used a different reef calculator... I stand corrected- 40Breeders hold exactly 40 gallons, when dimensions are taken from inside the tank.

 

Scrapping the deep sandbed idea. Still think I'll do mud and a layer of fine grain sand with LR rubble with a small CUC for looks and function.

 

Mangroves will be more for looks than function. Chaeto and some other macros will do the dirty work. I'll talk to the guys at reefcleaners and see what they recommend.

I may put window tint on the face of the display fuge to prevent most day light from getting in there- so I can get a true reverse light cycle going on in there. With night time illumination in the fuge, it should display into a dark room pretty well.

 

And... Once it's established and I've got it full of pods and macros, maybe I could stick a single seahorse in there? Just an idea- I haven't put any research into seahorses at all... Putting one in there (with the little I know about them at the moment) is unlikely because I'm not hatching live BS for them every day....

I've had a few people say the return pump is appropriate sized... One (bitts) says it's pushing too much... Did I screw myself with that purchase?

 

 

Edit- To anyone buying equipment, here's something I recommend... Use "The Reef Tank Comparison Shopping Tool" to find the best prices on everything on your wish list. Write down or save a screen shot of the prices, and then e-mail them to your favorite supply store (like BRS) BEFORE you order- and get a price match. This way you saved yourself some cash, and you get everything from the same shop- so you save on shipping, and if stuff breaks, you only have one retailer to deal with!

nope its a damn good pump. Just more than needed, to supply the needed flow for filtration alone.
