Thanks Rockhead! Unfortunately, they're gone. They were taking up half the tank and the skirts were irritating several of my corals. They actually caused my EZs to melt. I traded them for some other frags. Will update with pics later.

That light looks really great. I dig the white acrylic too. And I really like the bracket you made for the buckpucks. And +1 on cutting it all by hand. I'm dreading the day when I lose access to a laser cutter in a few months

Laser cutter!??! drool

You should stay late one night and cut yourself a bunch of panels before you leave.

you got rid of all the palys? =/

Well, I got rid of that giant colony of Crown Royals. I did take a few frags from it though. So, I can recolonize with them in a more controlled manner. Like I said, they were bothering a lot of stuff.

By the way, I just received my MR3-S frag rack from Blackrock Reef. This thing is a real work of art. Sushi deserves huge props! I can't wait to install it tomorrow. With the finishing of my new light and the recent success I've had feeding my tank, I'm going to get back into collecting zoas and palys.

didnt you already have that frag rack in this tank at some point?

My frag racks are made from cell culture petri dishes that I found laying around my lab. I sawed them into a few pieces and epoxied some sealed magnets on them. They're functional, but the wells are sealed at the bottom. So, detritus easily builds up in them.

Any new work with clay? I made a catfish mug in school, but of course it's in school and I don't have the wanted amount of time.

Thanks for the shoutout :)

Hope you enjoy it!

You do need a bigger tank though... time to upgrade? :)

Yep, I've had my brain going about my upgrade for a good nine months now. I've been doing a lot of research and compiling information about each individual piece of equipment for it. ' Just like I did with the purchase of this frag rack. I try to only buy the best so that things don't need to be replaced. ;)

No sculptures recently, but i did use the polymer clay to make fancy knobs for the potentiometers on my new LEDs. There's a link to my build a few posts up.

A catfish mug? LOL! Sounds like fun! I hope you post an image.

verry cool light MR.M, how do you like the dimmable feature? does it seem to help or are you running that thing on full blast?

I love love love the dimming feature. Right now, I have it on basically minimum. I'll slowly increase it maybe 10%/month.

Hello All,

All of my recent hype has been about my new LED's, but there have been plenty of other changes going on with my tank as well.

To start out, here's the obligatory FTS:

FTS_20110311.jpg

The tank feeding has been going very well. I'm dosing live phytoplankton from Reef Nutrition, Coral Frenzy, and frozen cyclope-eze followed by larger water changes. Additionally, I moved my heater down to a temperature of 76! Since then, I honestly haven't needed to clean my glass. I've literally had NO green film build up on the glass in weeks despite the heavy feedings. I really think that lowering the temp has made the difference.

Here's a fun video of my CUC hard at work after a small feeding:

I traded my colony of Crown Royals. It took up way too much space in my tank and the long skirts were irritating a lot of corals. I think they caused my EZ's to melt. In return, I got a small colony of Ked's Red's, some grees palys of some sort, and a Kenya Tree frag. The Kenya tree frag is also a bit too large for my tank. So, I might get rid of that as well.

I also met a local reefer who gave me some Pink and Golds and some Pulsing Xenia. That has been one of my favorite recent additions. I let it sit on the sand bed until it held onto something. Then I put it up on top of my cone rock. I caught my first glimps of it pulsing on Friday. I'm hoping it eventually gets to the point that I saw it pulsing in the previous owners tank. It was way faster than mine.

Here's a vid of this my first signs of pulsing. Note: all pumps were off during this video. It's doing this all on it's own.

I'm sure you noticed in my FTS the big frag rack on the right side of the tank. This is my new MR3-S frag rack that I ordered from blackrockreef.com. I really like this thing. It's filled up already with frags from the Crown Royals, Green Implosions, Magicians, Ked's Reds, and a few others that are starting to come back to life including my Bam Bams and Zombie Eyes which I thought were goners a few months ago.

I've been experimenting with the taking pictures with the new LEDs. Having the dimming option on things really makes photography much easier. I just pumped up my neutral whites a little and was able to take images clear as day without the blue washout. However, I couldn't resist capturing an image with the royal and cool blues. It seems that green is almost the only color that the camera can pick up under those conditions.

I entered this image into a contest on CR.

Finally, I realized that I needed to come up with a new banner since the old one said that I was using the PAR38, which is no longer the case. Here's the new one. I find it soothing.

what is cr?

Captivereefs. The theme is green for St. Patricks Day. I also added a limerick.

iPhones take a crappy pic

But LED's are mighty sick

They take a tank that's blah and dank

And make it an.. eye-popping trick!

I also entered my LED light into a DIY contest there. It's a fun site, but very small right now. Nano-reef is still my home.

 Thanks SpainKenya! It's probably the closest I've come so far to photographing the pop from RB LEDs. I've been trying to photograph other stuff, but everything else looks either blue or b/w with the camera. This really sucks, because you should see the organism palys. Their red is so deep and intense. Also, the bam bams look amazing. Perhaps cameras in the future will be able to handle it better.

haha iphone does suck for pics. nice update too. the contest photo reminds me of some underwater alice in wonderland caterpillar hangout....

looking good, too bad about the crown royals though i loved those. i really want some (for my breeder not my pico) but am having a hard time finding them. i wish i could have a dimable option for my pico, but im trying to keep the equipment minimal, so par38 it is.

maybe your camera can take accurate pics of the tank under these LEDs. I mean my camera can, why can't yours, its probably better than mine.

as for xenia, look for it pulsing at sundown and sunup and also whenever your tank lights come on and off during your day cycle. also as an experiment, you could turn your light off and look at it. the xenia should start pulsing after a little while. if not, then after some time turn them back on and it should pulse.
